There is a Green Ghost in my tanks

Keep trying the trap every night, maybe even put a few pieces of rubble in it so the mantis feels comfortable staying in the trap. They are pretty smart and can learn to find their way out of a trap.

As a last resort, you could kill it off with something like Interceptor, the standard treatment for red bugs in reef aquariums. It will kill off all pods, shrimp, and crabs, so if you wanted to save someone, you would need to remove them. Other than killing off crustaceans, it's very safe. I've used it literally hundreds of times with no ill effects, but I would still consider it a last resort.

well my tank has been up for 14 months and my emeral crab vanished.... I am suspecting this mantis but I have seen no signes of him. it is possible my emerals escaped but I have not round his dried up body yet....

They say if you were to class a mantis shrimp to any known creature, it would be the T-REX. Its that bad. It will try to rival any thing you throw at it. Had one of those once and in under a wk it left a wake of destruction with things going missing in the night ........... a few snails, a few chromis, 2 peppermint and 2 skunk cleaner shrimp.
That thing is really the terror of the sea...................lol

To be fair, they say T-rex was a scavenger and not the predator they were once thought to be.

I would bet the mantis killed the chromis, took it into a den, and spent a day or two eating it. Even if the chromis is larger, the mantis has weapons, is very fast, and hunts at night.

I kept a peacock mantis from a 2" baby up to a 6-7" adult...when he was about 4" I put a 5" lionfish in with him...thinking that the mantis would nevr bother a venomous larger lionfish...well after about two months the mantis clubbed and stunned the fish, dragged it into its den, and stayed there for 3-4 days eating it before he came out again...there was no leftover parts of the lion fish. Mantis came out affter 4 days looking perfectly normal, and started looking for food again.

Do not underestimate them. They do make great pets, if you can keep them in a dedicated tank.

Didnt see you caught the chromis!

If you can catch the mantis, you could put him in a refugium or display tank. Keep trying with the trap, if hes in there he will eventually fall for it

Ever catch this guy? I have had a popping sound in my tank for years, but never see anything. I pretty much gave up trying to id it.

I love mystery critters!

We wound up with a real creeper in our tank. maybe saw it twice in 5 or 6 years. It was some long crazy bright yellow fish. Once when moving rock around we saw a yellow flash and thought maybe it was one of the tangs.....

Years later breaking down the tank all the rock out and almost all the water drained the water/ sand slurry went nuts. Scary part was how big it got. It was about 6 inches long and sort of wrass shaped but not. We caught it and no one could ID it nor wanted it back then. I wish I had a photo of it. It almost looked pre historic

I caught mine in 10 minutes after lights out. I used a peligrino glass bottle and the aluminum cap. I cut the top of the cap like a pizza and pushed it in slightly, then screwed it on the bottle. I filled the bottle with tank water, and placed a piece of raw shrimp in the bottle. I placed it in the tank and about 3 minutes later the lights went out. a couple more minutes i saw him run right into the bottle. 3" mantis. I got $20 from the LFS. He could go through the cap to get in, but couldn't get out. good luck
