Thieling Roller Mat???

Just ordered one from BRS for my new 300 build. Looking for any tips/tricks with setting this thing up from those who have them? Not a lot of reviews/info on them yet I am thinking about making a stand outside of sump for it to sit on so it doesn't take up to much room in the sump. I plan on feeding it with return, which I know i only supposed to be 600gph (not sure how this is going to dial the return flow down yet?) Any constructive advice is welcome. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, I will run one drain through roller mat and the other through filter socks to see how this performs. Thanks in advance for advice. Tom
 
I only have mine on a 120 with a 1.5 overflow so its perfect for my system. I thought about setting it up the way you are thinking. at the last minute I decided to cut out my filter sock holder and out it on a stand in the sump. the exit is just a little higher than the water line in the sump. I ordered the adapter kit but only ended up using the 40mm to 1.25" adapter. if you had extra bulkheads laying around your golden.
my thoughts on the rollermat. I really like it. the box could be a little thicker. mine was just a little warped. so the top doesn't fit perfect but it still fits. motor doesn't make any noise. outer electric box is nice and sealed. gears are double sided so that's nice also.
 
I thought about using a pump. I was hoping to catch food particles after feedings without having to use filter socks. I am afraid without plumbing this into the overflow or using filer socks, that there would be a lot of particles that would just settle in the sump if I only use a pump to feed it? That being said, if I can't get the return flow correct, a pump may be my only option.

I misunderstood your first post. I thought you were suggesting that I use a small pump to feed the roller mat, which is an option. I have a waveline DC12000 ordered for the tank. This will give me the ability to dial flow back a little. Good call. I will give that a try when I set it up and see how the tank reacts for a few months. I will be running 4 mp-40s for interior flow.
 
Roller mat came in today along with a few other goodies for the new build. I will post my thoughts after a few months of use.

I installed mine about a month ago as you described. I did have to build a shelf for it to sit on as I put it diectly in my sump. Outlet has to be above waterline....The nice part about the shelf is I could put my feed pump underneath it taking up less space. I am currently feeding mine with a Vectra but only because I had it and wanted to get the Theiling installed ASAP. Almost through my first roll after a month.

I do want to convert to overflow fed but I have too much flow. I did order a manifold to split the return - just haven't attempted it. Not sure I will as wont be a fun job considering my setup.

All in all - positive review from me. Wish they had a model that could handle more flow. That's really the only draw back I have. Oh, the outlet flow is noisy. I put a 90 on it and put it under the waterline. However, there's a lot of air as well causing bubbling noises. I may have re-think that to quiet it down. Somehow let the air escape while preventing the water from "crashing" into the sumps water surface.

following. I need more drainage output for my 200g elos so thinking about drilling it (while 1/2 full) and adding a beane overflow. Current tank full of particles and need more mech filtration.

I've just installed mine fed from the drain.

How on earth do you silence the output!? I've reduced flow to 1500 litres per hour, and placed one 45 degree elbow on the output with a 45 degree angles pic pipe 1" below sump after level. Bubbles everywhere!

Adding a air hole to the elbow doesn't help, nor does reverse durso
 
haven't heard that before.

longer tubes down the sump? allow the waterflow to work like a pump?
 
There's a few posts on here about the noise. I've used long and short tubes, none work. Reducing the output to say, 32mm might work by creating back flow and filling the pipe with water and no air, but it could also cause an overflow.

Super annoying given that I've spend so much money on expensive pumps for what was a very quiet tank!
 
I don't see why it'd be different than any other drain. I have no issue with noise on mine after installing a reverse durso.
 
Could you post a picture to show exactly how yours is setup?

I'm considering a ball valve to slightly back-fill the pipe to stop the noise (which will increase water level in the roller mat slightly)
 
A pic might take a while, but I'll explain it. The rollermat is installed just above the sump. The drain has an adapter to bring it to 1.25". The drain comes straight out about 10", then a 90 degree elbow to the left and angled down about 45 degrees that goes about 10" at that 45 degree angle, then another 90 elbow to the right for about a foot (straight and level), then a 90 elbow down through a bulkhead into my sump and a reverse durso.
 
Before the roller mat it all works fine, but after being filters and 'ejected' out of the central bulkhead in the middle of the unit, is where I'm getting a lot of problems.

So from the output of the roller mat, what do you have there?
