Things I learned at MACNA

1. Don't feed anemones large pices of food. Mysis is the largest they should get. Even when they seem to eat the large chunks we give them, they spit it back out in the middle of the night. Also the darker they are the healthier thay are. White or yellow Sebaes are bleached. A healthy anemone can be sliced in 2.

2. Most MH light bulbs can be used longer than one year if you just lower them a couple of inches closer to the water. See Sanjay's site for the PAR on your bulbs: www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com

3. Acro frags should be glued laying down and you can even cut them long ways and glue both halves laying down. Plate corals can be broken into pie shaped pieces and each one will grow back into a plate.

4. Vitamin B12 is good for fish. Crush a tablet and dissolve it in some tank water that you can then soak your food in before feeding.

5. I am going to start doing weekly 25% water changes.

All in all it was an incredible event and I am really glad I went. 13 frags and a colony of acro help too!

Let me ad to this the most interesting thing I found out at MACNA:

Boards like this are being reviewed by collectors/growers over see and THEY ARE HOLDING BACK THINGS (like Blue Squammies) to drive up demand, and then they flood the market (remember RBTAs about two years ago?)

I learned a ton of other stuff (about tank photgraphy, ORA and what they are doing, Microscopic reef life, and clams) but the fact above was by far the most interesting take away for me.

I learned you shouldnt plan to work the Monday after MACNA, as theres little time to sleep while there :)

Hope everyone had a great time! Thanks for coming!

fishfreak... I figured that they held stuff back to increase demand... What I didn't know was that they monitored forums like this and posted to increase demand AND held items back...

Who said this and at which seminar? give some details, I love water changes and am interested!

Chris

Didn't go to MACNA but I do beleive that Anthony Calfo as well as others have ben preaching this. For me, I do 50% water changes about every 2 weeks. I think I read somewhere that Calfo does even more, like near 90%. Yes my corals (SPS & LPS), anemones and even some sponges get exposed to the open air for about 1/2 hour but it dosen't seem to bother them as they are thriving in my tank. I did notice that the nusance alage that grows on the tank walls dosen't seem to like the air and will die off, which is a good thing.

90% water change?? WOW I should have asked him about that!
I wonder if that is weekly, monthly?
Chris

It was Anthony that recommended the large frequent water changes at his fragging workshop. He said he will take the water down to where the fishes fins are starting to stick up out of the water! Weekly!

lol, wasnt too long ago a few beautiul pics of gem tangs were attracting some attention..........

then OMG 3k for a fish!!! IMO without forums and the global hype that can be created, i reckon those fish would have gone for a LOT less.

This is news to me. I thought silversides were the food of choice. Mine gets one every 6 or 7 days. The only thing I've ever seen him spit back later was a large piece of scallop I fed him once.

First Impressions of LED's & Skimmers

First Impressions of LED's & Skimmers

You don't know how much I envy all of you who made it to MACNA this year. I need to replace some of my old equipment and wish that I could have gone to look at the new stuff, specifically HOT skimmers and LED fixtures.

Has Deltec come out with its MCE300 HOT skimmer yet?

Did Sanjay Joshi convey any impressions that he had on the new PFO Solaris LED fixtures?

Thanks!

I learned about raffles :D

You can spend $400 on raffle tickets for a Euroreef skimmer and win something like 9 of them & make a huge profit when you sell them.

Also, you can spend $200 and wind up with one little fish

And in my case you can spend $9 on tickets and win a $70 fish :) but have regrets that you didn't invest in Euroreef protein skimmer tickets

Deltec had a demo of that skimmer there, but it's not out yet.... end of october I think they said.

I think he (Dirk) eventually won 14 - yes FOURTEEN - out of the 55 raffled Euroreef skimmers !

I myself did good at the raffle too:D I only put 3 ticket ($3 each) to that drawing box and still won one of those skimmers.

And I put 6 $3 tickets in the REEFKEEPER 2 box and won it too:cool: I was planning to buy this system next week and now I don't have to anymore:)))

I also put 5 tickets to the ORA tank and ended up w/ a rose mille - not to bad. I was #27 in the order to pick my coral, I thought may be only some green mushrooms or ORA live rocks left in that tank for me to pick when it came to #27, but was surprised to see the pink mille still there!
