Thinking about adding a Scooter Blenny (Ocellated Dragone)

Question; there is a very fat healthy looking Scooter Blenny at my LFS. Is my week 12 old, 180 ga with a 40 gallon sump, Refug, Cheato, lots of pods, and Live rock rubble enough to sustain him?

I was also going to quarantine him in my 12 gallon and see if I can train him to eat Frozen foods as well. Good idea or bad.

Suggestions? I've read up a lot and they look pretty tough to keep....Thanks Tom

I would say yes if you currently have lots of pods, just be sure to occasionally check at night to make sure you still have a good populations going because it is amazing how fast scooters or mandarins can decimate a pod population. Find a good place to buy pods from to so that you can replenish the colony every so often.

I might give him a try. I think about a week observation and training in quarantine. I really want to see if I can train him to take prepared foods as well. Thank you for your reply...........

Go for it. One of the most important parts of success is getting one that is not too skinny already.

They're not that hard if you're willing to work with them a bit. They're much easier to train to frozen than the other mandarins. Try prawn roe, cyclops and mysis. Put the food in and turn off the flow for 1/2 hour. They need time to pick food off the substrate. Feed them this way 2-3 times daily and you'll be fine. I've had5 scooters and they've all thrived in this routine and in much smaller tanks than yours. Great fish.

I think I'm going to; my DT is just full of Pods everywhere!!! The Refug also has a huge population. So what happens when you leave on vacations? Can I just count on the pods for feeding??? My fish sitter usually comes every other day...

Also There's nothing to compete, all I have is a False Percula, Royal Gramma and some Hermits and snails. There is also a Purple Firefish in Quarantine

Thank you for your comment!!!

I guess it depends on how long your vacations are. I think every other day feeding with a solid pod population for a week would be just fine. A month? Not so sure.

I wish my Vacations could last a month!!!!!! 7 days MAX for any vacation.....come to think about it, I've not had anything over 5 days in years.....man I need a vacation :) thanks for the reply

Well, i picked her up. My daughter named her Royalty.

She has a great personality! I tried feeding her some raw shrimp and she tore it up!!! She's in quarantine now and I think I'm going to keep her there for a couple more days. I want to work with her and try some different foods, plus my QT is in my 5 year olds room and she love her.

Very cool fish
