This just doesn't look right...

I'm cleaning the tank getting ready for water.

I noticed that my return pipes do not look like anyone elses? Do I need to change this plumbing? All the others I see are taller with a hook at the top?

Advice please!! and idk why this pic is sideways......

Why did you set it up like that? Does it just returns open top in the overflow? Yes, you need to bring it to the surface of the overflow and usually it is spread out with loc-line fittings.

The skinny pipe is your return, the larger pipe is your drain , and yes you are missing a piece to it

Is is glued in place? Agree with fishgate, bring it to the top then through/ over the wier with loc line

Both should bend---the return line should enter the DT, and have a fan-shaped nozzle or branch via a T into 2 separated nozzles. The larger, drain line is missing a longish straight piece that sets your water dept in the overflow. (to let the water fall that far would make a real noisy overflow) and a U-shaped piece with an anti-fish grating atop that that makes the drain line look like a Christmas candycane, bent over at the intake part. Your lfs may have some of these parts, if it's a real lfs. Don't glue anything: teflon tape is ok, and if it leaks underwater, who cares? You never know when you may need to change out a bulkhead or even pull a drain pipe.

You have half a setup for a Herbie overflow there. I am sure that is not what the original owner setup, but you may want to look it that design verse a durso. A little more to setup, but dead silent in operation.

I'm looking at the Durso and will convert to that I think - it's the easiest.

The only thing I don't understand about it is the way it sits in the water. All I can think is that it would cause an air lock?

Really, I'm not usually this dense but can't seem to wrap my head around it.

I would go with the Herbie overflow. http://gmacreef.com/herbie-overflow-reef-tank-plumbing-method-basics/. I have had both the Durso and Herbie and they work well. The Durso is a little harder to dial in and can get noisy. The Herbie is Dead Silent.

Here is a picture of my setup with Dorso overflow. However I'm using bulkheads the my tank. My caps aren't on yet either but the have a 1/8" hole drilled in them.
