Both should bend---the return line should enter the DT, and have a fan-shaped nozzle or branch via a T into 2 separated nozzles. The larger, drain line is missing a longish straight piece that sets your water dept in the overflow. (to let the water fall that far would make a real noisy overflow) and a U-shaped piece with an anti-fish grating atop that that makes the drain line look like a Christmas candycane, bent over at the intake part. Your lfs may have some of these parts, if it's a real lfs. Don't glue anything: teflon tape is ok, and if it leaks underwater, who cares? You never know when you may need to change out a bulkhead or even pull a drain pipe.
