thoughts on kessil A150 Led...

i was thinking about going with some but how many would you need over a 120 4x2x2

It depends on your goal for the tank. I'm assuming you want a mixed reef. I'd buy 4 to start.

You can try 3 on one side and be able to gauge performance. If you need more light on that half of the tank you can add the fourth one. You might be able to light it with 4 evenly spaced across if your heavy on lps and light on sps.

I would buy one 6500k, one 10k, one 15k, and one 20k and put them on half of your tank and post the results. I'm joking, thats what I want you to do so I can see how it looks.

I have a 120g 48x24x24 and I'm pretty sure u don't need more than 4. I currently have two on my 4 ft tank, and this seems to me like it's enough light. , definately no dark spots. I was looking into adding some blues to my tank, and decided to add two more 15k kessils.to my two 10k's. Will put them tight together, two on each side. But to say you need 4 on each side, is well ridiculous. At least it's ridiculous to me since I see my kessils every day. That said, I don't have sps and have limited corals for now, but r all doing great with two kessils

I agree that 4 would be the most you would need over a 120. I've also got two over a standard 4x2x2 and my LPS are happy but i doubt i could keep SPS more than halfway down the tank without adding two more. 8 over this size tank would be serious overkill IMO.

I have a 120 and tried out the A150s. Two units are definitely not enough for an SPS tank. The reason I say 8 units is because of the spread, because the biggest problem with most 120s is the support bar that goes across the middle of the tank. Otherwise I think you could get away with 6 if creatively hung (maybe in clusters of 3 on each side).

The more I think about it, 4 might be okay too, if hung in a diagonal pattern. However, the more we talk about multiple A150s, the more it doesn't make sense. This will soon be a moot point since when the A350s are released (I expect to see them on March 10th), with a wider spread at 90 watts, we'll be fine with only 2 units. Imagine lighting up a 120 with only 180 watts and the ability to "tune" the white and blue to our liking.

Two a150w on each side of the support bar covers half of my tank more than enough, two on each side (4 total) looks really good and would probably support sps.....number one reason for going with a150w, their upgradability, with my upcoming larger tank in the works. A350 will be better for deeper applications, I'm just hoping that a150w will go slightly down in price once the a350's come out, but I'm not holding my breathe

Definately some good advice being given out. I'm glad you rethought the 4 on each side recommendation D-tran. Having multiple A150s (anything over 5) with the A350 coming out is generally a mute point(unless you have money to spare). I want the lighting of 4 A150s, but that'll be a little over $1000. I should just buy 4 for my tank but... if the A350s are priced similar to the H350s I'll be getting more for my money with the A350s. The 2 A350s would be 180 watts for less than $1000 while the 4 A150s would be 128 watts for over $1000. With big tanks that are shallow, and also LPS dominant tank owners, you can buy several A150s and have your tank look great! Laredo your 120 tank looks nice with 2 and will be even better with 4. I've rethought my recommendation as well and would say 5 could be the best number for a 120 if you don't have a large crossbrace. You should buy 4 and see if your corals are needing a 5th. Laredo says 4 and Jerpa says 4 too, so 4 is definately the best way to go. The reason I suggest considering 5 is because any sps on the bottom half of the tank would be difficult. Jerpa owns 4 and has the same tank size so his word is better than mine. Jerpa says sps on the bottom half of the tank would struggle and evidence supports his position. 5 might get it done better if your wanting a 50/50 split of lps and sps. You could keep sps strictly on the top and lps on bottom but...with mixed reef I think it would be nice to be able to keep sps 2/3 to 3/4 of the way down. This is because you'll be able to arrange sps corals where they look best instead of by their minimum lighting requirement. For anyone that's considering buying over 5 A150s waiting for the A350s should be better financially.

How much modifying is the question.

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I specifically joined to participate in this thread. I have 2 kessil a150s over a 75gal. I have 15k.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my lights! I just got them last month with tax returns :) growth is amazing. I went from 175w mh and 108w t5 to 300w kessil and 54w t5(supplemental for color). I went from thinking I was doing something wrong because my coral wasnt growing very much to now im getting a couple frags per week. My tank LOVES the new lights. I find them to be quite expensive though because now that I really like the color, I CANT STOP BUYING CORALS!!! My ONLY complaint is that a 14k option would be nice. 10k is too white and 15k is too blue, so all I did is use my 10k t5 to supplement the white light. Now the color is spot on what I was looking for!

Help me understand, you say you have 2 A150's and 300w kessil plus 54 watts of T5. The A150 is 32 watts, not 150? Unless you added another 8 Kessils you do not have 300 watts. At any rate, welcome here.

Welcome to Reef Central Party fish can you post some pictures of your setup, PS your two Kessils what wattage do they run at I doubt 300 watts.

I've got a question for those who have used the gooseneck on a rimless. My tank comes tomorrow and I'm apprehensive of mounting the light to the tank. I've seen a few folks who seem to have done it without issue but I do have a question. Are you attaching something to the inside of the mount to prevent the metal from resting on the glass? I was thinking rubber or some foam.

The gooseneck comes with a spacer for rimless tanks.

Im looking to get 2 a150 to replace my 4x54 t5 fixture.

my tank is 48w18h15d with a 5x5 overflow in the middle. the tank was given to me by my dads friend and he never knew the gallons and i couldnt figure it out.
