Hey, how did you get me picture? You be the one hanging out in der front yard snapping with that high tech photo machine ehh?

.....To all those who ridicule and turn your noses up at those who play outside the box;)
..
... Where are the new ideas, where are the experiments? Most importantly, why does everyone have the same looking aquarium? Is there something that triggers our minds to say that a rectangle box, with rock stacked nicely along the back, having corals carefully placed, with bright lights, and a few fishes makes a beautiful living room centerpiece. It may be beautiful, but it just isn't right to me. For once I would like to see something truly unique. I would even settle for someone who dumps their live rock in the tank, straight from the box, and lets it land wherever it may land. Why the reduction in creativity and experimentation? My explanation for this is that we don't need it anymore. Or do we? Are people simply not trying new things because there tanks are already perfect? To me, they are not. As the wise philosopher Aristotle once said "There was never a genius without a tincture of madness". It is my fear that if the hobby doesn't allow and promote the ideas of individuals trying new things and striving for improvements then we will never make progress from where we are today. The goal is to make progress to a point where aquariums are perfect. So I guess the question is... are we there yet?

As always questions and comments are welcome.

Hear, hear! Mickey57 you are spot on.
Thinking out of the box & doing things ghetto style makes a few people get out of joint for two reasons I can think of. First, the manufactures of marine products want you to buy there junk. Coming up with your own solutions and ideas bypasses them completely. Second, a small majority of the folks with the moolah to pay out for their "Rolls Royce" aquatic symptoms don't want to be outshined by some clever hobbyist who found a better or even cheaper way to achieve the same results.

The way I see it the marine industry has plenty room for improvement. The individual hobbyist is tweaking and tinkering as a result of the industry not willing to acknowledge this. Key example: CA reactors. Every one I've seen is flawed one way or another and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to resolve these issues. By not improving their products the manufactures are literally thumbing their noses at us. They know exactly what about there products are flawed but know there is no alternative on the market and therefore have no motivation to improve. Even worse they continue to sell these goods for top dollar. Well then, it's time for us to thumb our noses back by not buying their dooky and designing our own!:bum:

Love this ghetto thread

Love this ghetto thread

I became inspired to upgrade my AGA salt fish tank into a reef back in Nov. 2003 after stumbling upon Reef Central.

A bunch of cool people into reef tanks, but with tanks so amazing that I knew I probably would never get to that level. However, I've done some solid upgrading since then that I believe my tank is on its way to becoming respectable.

Then when I thought it could'nt get any more fun, I run into this ghetto thread. Yes, I've had my share of ghetto tanks and I feel rigtht at home here.

I hope to contribute to the charm of this thread soon. Wait a minute, charm does not sound ghetto. Maybe after a couple of tequila shots, I'll get there. I know I can.

What you talk'n bout Willis? :frog:

Girls don't need no stink'n Old English. :D Now the 45 on the other hand, that would come in handy everytime some tank project becomes too !@#$%^&* challenging.:smokin:

Genetics, is your tank setup in the basement where they shot the final scene of "The Blair Witch Project"?

Now that you mention it, it does look like it's from the movie. The house was constructed in 1899 so I would guess that the foundation is close to that of the Blair Witch Project's.

I'll try and take and post a few pics of my 20g tupperware tank I have setup housing some extra LS, LR a true perc and a blue damsel along with a few serpent starfish.
