~~ Thread of the Month ~~ Ghetto Tanks!

This is the best thread I have ever encountered on any aquarium forum! Let's keep it going. I wish I had digital pictures of some of the monstrosities I have created over the years, including the "temporary" pond I once used to keep my reef alive while moving into a new house and setting up a new tank. It had the usual kitchen chair supported light fixture, a skimmer sitting on cinder blocks next to the pond and an extra MH spot light hanging from the rafters with all of the electrical equipment scattered around the floor surrounding the "pond". I had an electrician in to do the wiring for the new tank and he almost passed out when he saw my set up.

Shoot, I forgot all about posting pictures of my own stuff. Hehe, let me see if I can take some pictures soon also, You should see my new RO unit. At least it is in the closet.

This is my tank.

Kinda Ghetto, embarising at least. I have the intank skimmer attached to some tubing and some gutter adapter as an inlet, I also need to have the glass top hanging off the right side to accomidate the skimmer.

My major is civil engineering so of course I build bridges w/ my LR, but I didn't level the tank. Also notice the Salvador Dalie poster as the background. Currently I have all that plus I added a DSB to the left 1/4 of the tank only.

Sorry, but that is not bad at all.

I think the pirate adds a lot to my fuge

i've got a skilter 300 with flex tube from a siphon on the intake that goes 90 degree connection from an old fluval 303... that connects to the bottom piece of a powersweep 226... from there is a tube going up that used to be part of an undergravel filter. the top of that skims water off the top via another connector and the end piece of that old fluval. got all that? LOL. yo man, whatever works. and it was free. we've all heard that skilters suck but that's because they don't actually skim of the top... mine does.... HAHAHAHAHA =D

Absolutely amazing what we come up with to make things work better then they normally do. Even at the distress of it's looks. hehe

Well here is my humble entry. It is my sump which is located in the closet under my stairs. The tank is on the other side. Note the nicely unfinshed holes cut in the dry wall and the beautiful cinder blocks as stand. Not noted in picture is the media bag tied around the hose containing carbon.

I wish I had pics of my temporary canopy. Which was just a vho retrofit being held up in place with soup cans. That was nice...
