~~ Thread of the Month ~~ Ghetto Tanks!

Dave A Do the police have another reson to be suspicious?:bum:

One thing that I didnt share, and I dont have a pic of is; back when I first started out I had two 48" bulbs over a my 60. All it entailed was the bulbs and the waterproof end caps. I didnt have a hood so I went down to HD and bought a white rain gutter and the ends. I drilled a hole in either end for the bulb end caps to go into, put them on the 48" rain gutter and called it good. A rain gutter hold two T-12 bulbs just about right. I then zip tied two tape cassette holders together and used two on either side of the raingutter hood to hold the bulbs over my tank. It was a thing of beauty.

This Thread is fantastic!!!!! I love everything about the word Ghetto Fabulous................:smokin:

I just build mt first reel SW Reef Tank and I thought I let lots to be desired and that I did everything wrong and now I feel like Picaso....HeeHee J/K....

I am shocked and impressed by some of the awesome inventions....Einstien would be proud:)

Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m just surprised there havenââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t been more gruesome deaths in the hobby. Not the fish, the keepers. I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t know how I originally missed this thread but when I came across it last night I was laughing so laud that I woke my wife up. Most fun Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve had on RC in a long time.

Okay. I have to get in on this now. Coming from being a very low financial situation, but will do anything to make a dream come true, here it goes. Though this picture is old and not really that ghetto, I still thought that I would like to share. I have now upgraded everything and I have to say that it looks really good now considering everything.

Here is the tank a few months back.

Here is the start of the upgrade

I will post pictures of the finished project ASAP. In my opinion you can still be ghetto and have something that looks good and not an eye sore.

You know how you always asked when you were a child "What's for dinner?" and your mother replied "**** on a shingle."? Well...she wasn't joking.

Curing the "dinner" took about a month  Drying time was about an hour in the overn

I'm known as a guy that wont pass up a free meal but don't bother ringing the dinner bell in my direction please:D

I finally got pictures of my update. Here is my ghetto "In-Wall" "Room Divider" tank.

This one is from the the Kitchen sink/ back of the tank. No need for a painted background here

This one is of the whole set up. It doesn't look too bad.

This one is a wide shot of the living room

This is one from the front of the tank

Now you say "That doesn't look 'ghetto'". Well here is where it gets interesting

Tank - Free - throw out.
In-wall Cut out - It was a kitchen window that was a PERFECT fit
Sump - Free - broken and now fixed.
Skimmer - $50 - was going to be a throw out. Needed cleaning and the pump needed re-wired
Plumbing(Including Spray Bar and PVC overflow) - ~$5
Return Pump - $60...I couldn't find anywhere to skimp here
Sump/Fuge Hood and light - Free off of the 29g tank
Powerheads & Heater - Free - had them from YEARS ago
HydorFlo - $20, got broke, I rigged it to work again
Sand - $12.50 Southdown from a friend
Rock - Live ~$100. DIY Rock ~$10
PCs - Used ~$100
Fish - "used" - $30 (4 chromis, 1 diamond watchman goby)
Corals - Frags from friends, and "singles" that blow around in LFS tanks ~$100 ($50 was for the Acanthastrea lordhowensis frag. 1 polyp is now 9 babies.)

Total - ~$487.50

Add a little patience and I should have a fully covered reef in no time.

You might say ~$500 that is expensive. Now remember. If my apartment would allow me to set up tanks larger than 50g, I could set up my hand me down 125g, add about $20 more of DIY Rock, about $50 more of Southdown (which I already have), and 3 Refurbished MHs and some supplemental actinics for $400 and I have an upgraded full blown 125g reef for ~$950-$1000

Now tell me, can you get much more ghetto than that. And I mean ghetto, not inventive

Pardon the white haziness. I took these pictures when I was working on getting my Ca back in line.

*Remember....One man's trash is another man's treasure.

One more note. All the equipment has slowly been gathered since Nov. 2004. That means for 9 months I have skrimped and saved to spend roughly $54.17 per month. That's not that bad considering I have paid ~$12.19 per gallon versus the average of $30-$50 per gallon

I wish I still had my broken pump that was duct-taped (underwater) to my PVC. I also had duct-tape holding my return lines in place and I still have tape holding one of my PHs in place (I can post pics later). "If you can't duct it, **** it!" I also have a piece of tubing sticking out of my overflow to keep the noise down... All of this is on my 29 gallon.

Ok here's a my sterlite 20 or so gallon reef setup. I have a 3" live sand bed a bunch of live rock, a frogspawn, a few mushrooms a ton of caulerpa, aquaclear powerhead, cpr bak pak with mj1200mod, 200 w won heater, Home Depot Light of America 65w powercompact and a true percula, yellow tailed damsel(have had for 4 years), a cleaner shrimp, a peppermint shrimp, two serpant starfish, and various snails.. It's kinda the leftover stuff from my 90g swap I did a week ago.. this will all go into my friends 25tall reef we're setting up in the next few weeks.. but until then its sitting on my counter in my kitchen next to my 44g ro/di holding container..

Poor 55 left in a store room in the basement and neglected since moving, waiting for me to finish the 200 in-wall to save what's left :( VERY top of the line sump there too!! Cost me an arm and a leg!

But, notice we still found room for a couple of chairs and have the flashlights ready :)

I give you a 7 on a Ghetto scale of 1-10
