Three nano tanks at work

I brought the camera in today, so I was able to take some better pics of the tank. I've added my hydor back to the output so that it gives the xenia some time to pulse in between getting blown around. I've also mounted a lot of the corals to the rock and moved my gsp rock to the top so it will hopefully attach to the wall. Since I'm not going to clean that side of the tank I'd like for it to be covered in gsp eventually. Below are the pictures I liked the best. James also showed me how to make it so you can click on the pictures to get a higher resolution version.

My collection of zoas. They started with three orange and 2 or 3 multi-colored. The multi-colored are definitely my favorite.

The euphyllia have really opened up now that the tank has been running for a little while. And of course my crazy death-defying clown likes to be the center of attention.

Here is the latest on my tank. I grow Xenia, vermetid snails, and Macro Algae pretty good, but the rest looks like crap.

My friend says I'm too hard on myself, so I'm going to edit some positives to this thread.

My orange monti is doing great and is encrusting up over my rock. My green polyped acro is also doing really well. He wants to shed his brown and let his purple come out so badly, but there just isn't quite enough light. He'll get there one day. Another acro from a friend seemed to be dieing after the transfer, but he is doing well. My orange zoanthids are doing alright. They get irritaded by the vermetids, but otherwise are growing.

I'm really enjoying the GSP. I would like it to grow all along the bottom of my tanks like grass.

I have anthelia growing on the side of my tank (by accident - but am leaving it there) and zoas growing on the back!

My nano is at work as well!

Great thread here. I had a 7 gallon bow at work. However, I was the only one there with anyting other than a Betta in FW.

Got my own office now and I plan on adding a 14 gallon or bigger soon.

Very nice tanks folks.

How do you top off the water? Do you bring ro/di water from home? or the store? or where ever you get it.

we all do it a little differently. I have a 6 and 7 gallon jug under my desk. One is for fresh and one is for salt for water changes. There are 2-3 lfs to get water from that are pretty close by. I try to bring them in first thing in the morning, but it doesn't always work out that way. We're all in the IT department, so if people ask we typically joke that it's "server cooling fluid". some people laugh at that, and others go right along with it. Most people know that it's for the fish though. with a tank this small though I only have to refill the jugs about once a month, or maybe a little longer.

as for topoff, we all do it manually. I had a drip system at first, but could never get it dialed in exactly how I wanted it. One day I came in to find a gallon or so of water on my desk and my fish had sloshed out. We all put lids on our tanks at night, which cuts down on the evaporation considerably.

JargonMan

Here is my 12 gallon nano at work. You can see the zoas on the back wall and the anthelia on the left wall. Crazy.

I really like the zoas growing on the back wall. That's going to look awesome once they get the entire back covered.

thanks!

We've talked about what we'd do if we had our own offices. I'm picturing a 30 or 40 gallon rimless cube.

Recent upgrade from a hair algae/red slime infested 10 gallon to new 15 gallon digs. As you can see, the 10 gallon was not attended to enough. The new 15 gallon has a front viewable refugium (currently empty in pics), Tunze 902 Doc skimmer, and a Tunze Nanostream 6025. Also, after the water runs through the refugium it is forced through a bag of carbon and phosguard before being returned to the tank. I hope that all these changes will keep the tank looking as clean as it does now.

Another change that I made was to turn my 70 watt halide 45 degrees to light the tank better but now I can no longer mount my power compact actinic. The tank looks considerably more white than I like and the corals don't pop as much. I'm considering my options right now and will either add a 24'' t-5 actinic retro or swap out the 70 watt for a 150 watt 20K and leave out the actinic. I'm tempted to do a 250 watt 20K cause as Jargonman would attest to I always go a little overboard in this hobby.

I also added another saddleback clown to give my existing one a friend. I was a little worried that the existing clown would be aggressive to the new comer, but they've been happy campers since adding the new guy. The new clown is already hosting the anemone and accepting food. I couldn't be happier with these two little guys.

Hope you likes!!

Ok. Lots of folks asked for pics so we posted them. Then the thread died again. Come on, let's get some comments. What do you all think?

I can't imagine having a reef at work... I wouldn't get anything done... I have hard time not staring at the tank all the time when I'm home.. heheee

I saw a small, cube shaped tank at the Shedd aquarium that had an entire wall covered with zoa's. It was sweet!

Hope those zoa's keep spreading on the wall.

another saddleback keeper, i love mine. he's hosting a H. crispa right now and coudn't be happier. i am thinking of getting him a buddy tho. where'd you get yours my LFS hasn't had them since i got the first one

so I took a few pictures of things I've changed in my tank. Below are the pics with explanations.
PS. word on the street is JargonMan is getting ready to upgrade from his 5.5 to a 10! maybe he'll post some pics when he's done.

All this talk about zoas growing up the back wall got me excited so I fragged my gsp and glued some pieces to the side wall. I am mainly posting this picture so a few months from now I can look back and have a before and after.

<br /><a href="http://bp2.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DIHYuPtMI/AAAAAAAAAPc/8FknCMrWERg/s1600-h/IMG00028.jpg"><img src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DIHYuPtMI/AAAAAAAAAPc/8FknCMrWERg/s400/IMG00028.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161345202187646146" /></a>
when I first thought about keeping a reef tank I thought that the silver branching xenia was my favorite coral. I then put some in my tank and it would shrivel up and turn black. I could take it out and put it in JargonMan's tank and it would come back to life and be beautiful. We finally figured out it was the heat and now that my tank is running cooler the xenia seems to be doing ok.

<br /><a href="http://bp1.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DIIIuPtNI/AAAAAAAAAPk/bEcoB9LghIM/s1600-h/IMG00029.jpg"><img src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DIIIuPtNI/AAAAAAAAAPk/bEcoB9LghIM/s400/IMG00029.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161345215072548050" /></a>
I moved my big gsp rock down below the hydor after fragging it and then was able to move my orange monti cap closer to the wall. Where it was at before it was shading the zoas and causing them to reach out for the light. I like it better when they stay flush down with the rock.

<br /><a href="http://bp0.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DII4uPtOI/AAAAAAAAAPs/xKcjhp1xsKc/s1600-h/IMG00030.jpg"><img src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_N9poUkAWvQY/R6DII4uPtOI/AAAAAAAAAPs/xKcjhp1xsKc/s400/IMG00030.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161345227957449954" /></a></p>
Just a shot of my other xenia. This is the pom pom xenia and it's doing better now that I use my hydor. It gives the xenia a break between flow so it has time to do some pulsing. I'd like for the xenia to start growing up the overflow box and fill this corner eventually.

10 Gallon Stand

10 Gallon Stand

I started working on a little stand for the 10gallon upgrade. The 10 gallon is going to have an eheim hobby pump that will sit underneath it. I hope it turns out alright.

I like the little platform stand... are you using the pump underneath as a closed loop...??

Yes it will be a closed loop. I don't really feel like drilling the tank though, so I'm just going to put the intake tube in the overflow box. I got a wide-mouth nozzle from eheim that I'm going to use for the return.
