Through the Looking Glass

My carrolinia varies from very green to a shade of yellow. Right now it is very green. It is so different looking that I like it a lot. I did some plastic surgery on this a while back. The major portion of the colony was growing in an upward direction and not very visible so I cut it near its base and reglued it in a much more flattering position. Oh, did I say I like chalices as well, take a look below the carrolinia .

Awesome! I remember when you repositioned that Caroliniana.
Has it started to grow? I was curious to see if it would stay in the new orientation or begin to grow back the way it was before you cut it..
Your tank is absolutely amazing as always!
Do you think the change in colour from yellow to green could have anything to do with nutrient levels? Perhaps yellow=lower n and p. greener higher n and p?

It has most definitely grown but now I can see it through the front glass and you can't even tell where it was cut and reglued. I assume the area that has healed and grown over is a solid connection but that I don't know how to confirm without trying to snap it off. Anyway the colony in its new position is much more visible, looks natural and the new growth seems to be in a good direction for viewing.

I am pretty sure color is always related to nutrient level but I'm not sophisticated enough to understand exactly. I was having water issues, I always bought my water from LFS. I am now making my own water so those issues have been resolved. In terms of nitrates and phosphates, mine are always detectable but low. I have issues with the phosphate test kits so I'm never sure about my readings. I have tried lots of test kits and currently using Red Sea. Tried Hanna ultra low phosphorous and never felt comfortable about getting "all" the powder out of that darn foil container.

Thanks..
I have my doubts about the hanna checkers as well..
I did look up a utube video made by hanna concerning using the checkers. The thing I found most interesting in the video was that the person doing the test was not concerned with dissolving ALL of the powder before doing the test.
Now, I don't go crazy with getting every last bit of powder, nor do I try to dissolve every last bit of powder.. I usually get pretty consistent results.
Another very good po4 test kit, which is a little less common, is the new Elos phosphate Pro test kit. It gives very consistent results.. It's a colour change similar to the Red Sea but much more accurate..
Anyways, I think I've been through this whole thread 3 times and each time I take away something new.. Aside from the amazing corals and photos.. But the thing that is most striking is how laid back and NOT numbers obsessed you are and how simple you keep your husbandry..
Great job!

Thanks, I'm in the west San Fernando valley, Calabassas[/QUOTE]
You setting up a table for Rap this year?

This is ATL Joleen. It has a lot of green in the body which didn't really come out in the photo. It's probably 4- 6 inches from the sand but with all the white growth tips, it seems happy right there.

Thought I would share a fish picture. Borbonias anthias. I have a pair but I don't know quite how to tell if they are a mated pair or just BFF's

I read awhile back that you got the apex controller? Just wondering if you control everything on that, and how you like it? I'm looking for a controller, and apex is high on my list.

I really like the apex controller. Of course, when you spend $500 on a multiple plug extension cord, you kind of have to say you really like it. It is my first controller and it seems to work fine but I was fortunate and never really had a past problem that the controller would have resolved or warned me about.

I think the pre-fusion language is like writing old computer instruction in dos. Fusion seems ok but why does it not allow you to write menus in feed mode. I never complain about anything, but why can you buy a new dell computer for $250 that is awesome and for $500 you get an extension outlet that uses 1980 code. And of course yesterday, I just recieved my third EB-8, just a $160 timer extension cord, but at this point I'm all in.

So bottom line, of course I love my apex controller. Easy to use, easy to control, let's me check everything when I get paranoid. Oh, one more thing, I also recieved the neptune automatic feeder yesterday. For a hundred dollars, I never have to worry about feeding the fish anymore. Anyone know if it tells you if it is empty and needs to be refilled. Do they sell an automatic refiller for the automatic feeder, that would be really helpful also,

Purple stylo next to my red convexa. The red convexa is making a great comeback from my water issues. I have a better picture of the red convexa that I'll share as well

The first fish is an anampses femininus. Stunningly beautiful. The second fish is a chaoti wrasse and challenging to acclimate to an aquarium tank. Both of these fish came from a fellow reefer who had them in his tank for years.

Nope, it doesn't tell you it is empty. I wish too you could get a bigger chamber as I refill every 2-3 weeks.

This is not an sps, but what the heck. This is a UFO micromussa , atleast that is how I bought it a year plus ago. Not really sure because I'm not much of an lps or micromussa expert and apparently these guys like to morph depending on tank conditions as well

You have some really special corals and fish in there watchguy!
I enjoy coming in your thread and looking at your pics:)
You've great photo skills and i also thank you for the tutorial,i'll try your hints;)

thank you very much. Always feel a little awkward sharing what i know, because I don't really know if what I know is worthy of sharing and if it is right or wrong. Its just something I have done mostly by trial and error and most certainly by reading lots of how to threads. Plus although I have a lot of information, don't know which part of it is misinformation. There is a lot of science to reefing, but also a lot of conjecture. And unfortunately, its easy to acquire goofy info and then repeat it as fact. Probably should have just said thank you.

So here is my red convexa, just getting its color and polyp extension again. My water station is seemingly getting things right back on track. Wow, wish I had just not resisted making my own water for so long.

Couldn't have said it better myself =).. I always check in on this thread for pics and am amazed at your collection that you share. You have some seriously good taste when it comes to your coral/fish selection and great skills on showing us what they look like.. That micromussa is Def a keeper..
