Through the Looking Glass

Looks like a happy coral. Love the blue polyps. :)

The tank is reasonably "happy" at this time. I have three angels in the tank currently so I don't seem to have much polyp extension during daylight hours anymore. I have always really loved angels and knew that polyp extension would be minimized while they are out and about. I have a juvenile emperor, a majestic and a potters angel.

The angels don't seem to actually nip at the corals but they do love slime. Interestingly, when I add a new LPS frag, like a chalice or acan frag, that has been freshly Bayer dipped they go after the sliming frag and harm it. I have to "hide" a new frag under a ledge in the display for a week or so and then without any slime, they don't bother anything. It is that slime that some LPS like chalices give off, when you take them out of water and then put them back in. It has nothing to do with the Bayer.

Beautiful pics and tank

Thank you, as always, it is a work in progress.

This is one of my new favorites although it has been in my tank a long, long time. I have relocated it three times and this is the biggest it has even been. I am truly enjoying it grow and thrive. I am hopeful when it becomes a real colony that it maintains all those cool colors, green, pink/purple, yellow and the whitish blue tips.

I took these two pictures on different days to try and get the color right. I think the truth lies between these two photos. At the bottom left, is a very cool ppe favia.

Wow, that one looks stunning. Cant wait to see it once it starts growing some good sized branches. :)

i have alot of chalices which i love that i want to put into my display but my angels tear them up so bad ....im glad i read this im going to try and hide a few and see if the angels will leave them alone if i let the slime phase pass ??? i have about 6 angels though

The Angels were very aggressive about nipping and starting to destroy the chalices till
I figured out it was the slime they were aiming at. Once the chalices were sheltered, the Angels left the chalices alone and after a week or so, I moved the chalices anywhere I liked and the Angels totally ignored them. It almost turned out to be a very expensive lesson. A few of my new chalices are about a quarter of their original size before I solved the issue. All new chalices frags have transitioned painlessly with my new insight plus a shelter for the first week

Thank u so much ..... I hope it works for me.... I also have the same issue with acans.... Any secrets you've learned with acans or same procedure !!! I keep all my chalices and acans in a frag tank but like u said soon as I put hem in display they go nuts ....do u just hide them in a cave or something in that sense? It's mostly the regal angel and asfur that are pricks

Yes, I "hide" new chalices and acans anywhere there is some type of overhang for like a week in the display. My angels don't seem to like getting too close to overhangs when eating. So cave or overhang, just someplace where they can't get to that slime. Once the slime is gone, they have no interest, at least that is my experience in my tank. Alternatively, you could probably take a small plastic cup and cut out some holes for flow and place that over the chalice or acan until the slime has dissipated and then just remove the plastic cup.

Just wanted to let u know so far your little trick is working like a charm!!!! I now have 4 of my chalice colony's in my display.... I started with my not as nice ones first but it's crazy how the Angels will ignore them completely after a few days .... They look but don't taste :) thanks again

One last question and I'll leave u alone do u have any Zoas? In your display?and I know your a so cal local are u going to reefapalooza this weekend ?

Do you see all 3 of your angels nipping? I have a handful in my tank and the only one I've ever seen nip at my SPS is my golden.

No zoas and will be at RAP. And I'm glad that suggestion worked for you

All the Angels were interested in the slime. Otherwise, they all pick at rocks but not any coral

Always enjoy your little nuggets!
How about a big one every now and again? :)

Working on a bigger update but may take me some time to get it all together.

Very nice. Love the yellow circles around the tips.

Its an interesting coral. The one pictured is in high light, right at the very top of my tank. I was able to get another frag and I have placed it in much lower light and anticipating the base color to be much darker and hopefully even richer. Time will tell. The new frag was all brown when I got it and it is just getting those yellow circles and starting to get some color going. When it has had more time to accommodate and grow, I'll get pictures of that one too.

I have a soft spot for red heads:
