Time for some Clown Questions :)

Hi all,
Some background:
So of you have seen me around, My name is Carl and I have just started in the clown breeding game. I have a Pair of Percula's that started spawning in the beginning of September. They seem to start immediately fallowing getting a quality light fixture set on timers. Also, after a 120 gal tank move with a new house in July.
First batch, total wash, I knew nothing at that time, as you can see I joined RC on 9-10-06 :) Eggs were laid on back part of overflow and I tried fishing the hatch and failed. I thing I was fishing for something I didn't even know what it looked like. I took advice and got Wilkersons book and the Photoplankton Manual and started with Green water and Rotifers. I fallowed advice from the books and placed a 4in clay pot base in the spot of the spawn immediately fallowing hatch two. Where the pair is still laying eggs today.
Second batch total wash, don't think I knew what a rotifer was supposed to look like and fished out about 10 or so:) Still learning!
Batch three was the first to be reared/moved pre hatch and was going good and I brain farted and forgot to plug back in the heater after a cleaning :( so due to user error I killed more. one for the little guys survived for three days after a 11 degree temp drop, tuff little bugger.
Batch four I had a rotifer crash and had Mitch drop some off (thanks again) Along with some T-Iso and wouldn't even take gas money-Super Guy. I also was told bb was possible from the start so I did that and Today they're at 29 days with a count of 14 little buggers. :)
Batch five was better, got about 50-60 survivors now at 15 days and all is well. Feeding had Mostly DT's after a nanno contamination with rotifers-Learned from that one :).\
Batch six turned out to be a two day hatch, as some of the earlier hatches and lower temp. 81 Degrees F or so. Having a MH Lighting issue with the Balest so screwed up my temps.\

Well that's my background story and Some of what I learned thus far. Thanks to all on RC for your valuable incite.

I was actually feeling guilty jumping everybody else's thread so I figured I'd start my own for future questions. (Sorry Matt :) )

I can Post pics if anybody wants just let me know and I will. Any questions from newer folks I'll try to help the best I can.

Thanks again to all,
Carl

Know for the Question....Wondering if it is recommended to keep the eggs with the parents trough hatch in broodstock. I have been moving the eggs the night of the hatch and keeping them in sterilized parent tank water with a heater and an airstone under the heater and on to aerate the eggs. I have been playing around with the intensity of the air and can't seem to get better than 60 or so with a 250-300 eggs nest. IO was just wondering if 60 is good, don't get me wrong it's better than the first three I know, but I have read that rearing can archive better than 90% with I am even close too. Just looking for some incite of experience. Thanks...Carl

Yes on the parent is a 120 gal 24x48x24. the three tanks are folr batch 4,5,and 6. at 28 days, 15days and 1 days. Feed is rots/phyto cruched flack/pelet, oto and cyclopeze enriched with selcon and enriched bb shrimp. Rot's only for like 5 days, then bb and others. Check some of the other breeding threads- oynx breeding log from mwp - Awsome info, read the book-Wilkerson Clownfish and search this form. Lot's of info just gotta read,read,read.....Carl

wow nice pictures so the clowns lay there eggs in the plant thing? and then you remove them and put them in the 10g do the older guys eat the smaller ones?

I was advised to keep them separate, hence the three tanks :) looking to set up more organized situation so I'll be looking for suggestions.

New Set up Ideas!!!

New Set up Ideas!!!

I was Thinking on setting up something a little more organized to make things a little easier. Here's a picture of a tentative sketch of an area in my basement I got authorization to use for the fish. :) Permission granted on a limited budget, of course-I got a wedding to pay for next fall.

Just looking for some input, things I would have done different if I did it again kind of stuff. Particularly with piping and filtration. I did plumbing for 10 years in the past so that's not a problem. Was thinking to have all the 10 gal's piped together with valves to have solitary systems on one system along with tee'd in valves for individual water changes if needed. the two 20 or 30 gal. grow outs on one system I guess, with what type of filters, I may need help with. Do not have the tanks yet so that could have to so with if I get stuff used with the tanks or just get standard glass tanks and drill out for my needs.

Any comments and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated....Thanks...Carl

Carl, that's a neat little setup and can probably be done very inexpensively. The closed cabinets in the base could generate a lot of heat with the water pump running in there...just a thought that you might need some ventilation fans on that cabinet setup!

Matt

The cabinets under the tanks don't need to be closed up, just for the picture to get an Idea. Not sure on Filters and pumps but going to have a sump for two 20's at least. Any Recommendations?

If you're only doing 2 20's, why not just do something like a 55 gallon and put a divider in it, either removeable or permenant?

Matt
