Sorry to read this Rik.
Yes, I'm overwhelmed by the community support. I've been doing this reef hobby for a very long time. People bent over backwards to help me which is why it's important to me to give back and it's so nice to see what goes around, comes around backwards and forward. I don't check ph, nitrates or own an apex. Most of my equipment run on their own controller so I've not jumped in. I let the corals, inverts and fish tell me and it's worked for a long time this way but it got me this time with my sps but since inverts didn't feel the effects I don't know how high the ph went plus I run a cheato reactor on opposite light schedule as tank to keep ph from fluctuatingRik, very sorry to hear. At the same time is really promising to see our reef community support.
I witnessed you been always here to support others and sure it will pay back.
Hope you overcome this soon.
Out of curiosity, did you notice any spike in your PH while your Alk was creeping up?
I don't know what to say other then thank you and I'm humbled. Im sorry for the trouble you've had to go through. It was no fault of your own.Rik - been following your posts from my side of the internet for a while.
I always felt guys like you make this forum one of the greats with the knowledge, humor, and, on regular occasion, your charity. I'm glad to hear you're not getting out because this hobby is better off with you in it.
Like you I've got a confession as well. In November I hired a LFS to move my aquarium - they totally botched the job and killed a lot of my coral and fish. They showed up with the wrong sump and couldn't get the system restarted - then attempted to hand me a bill for 1.2k (notice the word: attempted). I even lost a 6+'' clam that a local reefer had been growing for many years and that I had for a year - it was very sad.
The point is: Like you, I was heart broken because I thought I was doing the right thing but got burnt. Just like mishandling dosing, we try to do good and this hobby is complicated and **** happens.
The coral is counting on us to pick ourselves up and start the system back up - lots of dying coral out there - even mother nature is having a hard time growing coral.
Good luck Rik and I've got a frag of pink boobies if you want.
thank you JeffWelcome to any frags from me as well.
Jeff
Mike, thank you. I don't care about high end vs old school although it seems like I do. I love colors and shapes. Old school offers that up just as much. Really look forward to one day hanging with you, checking out totm 2.0 and watching the Dodgers beat up on our northern rivals! That's for you Richard :lol:Thanks for sharing Rik. Not too many reefers will share their lows in this hobby. It also goes to show how important maintain ALK is in an SPS system.
If you're ever down this way, let me know. I don't have a lot of high end pieces but have a lot of the old school goodies.
Cody, believe it or not one of the things I'm most bummed about is that I was so looking forward to help you fill up that tank. I really wanted to do that and I can't.Sorry to read this Rik.
I agree with you. It won't be hard. My tank started with frags.Well learn from your mistake and make it better. May be set up a cal reactor for your next build. It will be hard for you now looking at frags instead of big colonies however this will give you a chance to improve your set up and RE aquacape to your new reef.
Good luck,
glad you didn't suffer much in the way of lossesSame thing happen to me, didn't realize I was out of alk. Lucky, my Ali dropped to 6.3 and I slowly let it raise back up. Only lost few branch of my toxic tablet. Lesson learn, alway check monthly to refill
Thanks for the encouragementwe've all been somewhere similar, so sorry to hear your troubles but you'll bounce back stronger and better!
hearing from an old timer (reefwise) always is a plus.I feel for you brother.
Thanks Tony. Hope the pieces you got are growing up nice.I'm sorry to hear Rik... let me know when you are ready for corals again. I'll frag you anything I have!
Thank youSorry to hear Rik.
Isn't that the truthSorry to hear about the terrible news. But wow, how a community of reefers come together to offer support for another reefer is great to see.

Thank you for the advice. Glad to know you're not just a fish guruSorry to hear. I know the feeling although not as many losses but still some major ones when my doser stayed on by itself
I then switched to a CaRx and haven't looked back
Thank you and smart on your part.Man these issue with alk gives me nightmares. So hard to read this thread.
Sorry for your lost. Can't image the devastation in your tank. Had a lil hiccup with alk and lost a couple of sticks i like a lot and gave me nightmares for days. Now im constantly checking my alk.
very generous of you and thank you. Your tank is exceptional by the wayMy tank also suffered an alk swing several months ago. My alk went from 7 to 9.75 in less than a day. Due to low nutrients I did have over a dozen frags stn. Worse part was thinking it may have been something else like bugs or some metals leaching for several weeks. Never found anything wrong besides the alk swing.
If you're ever in the area of the 710 and 105 let me know and I'll frag anything in my tank for you free of charge.
Thanks for your encouragementDamn Rik, sorry to hear this. I know the feeling my friend. Hang in there.
Thank you Kenny. I've still got Zoas and they're doing ok but I don't want to minimize your generosity.Sorry to Hear Rik. I have a good size frag of Goblins of fire, bbeb, rasta, PPE and sponge bobs zoas when you are ready and come down this way. On the house of course. oh and tubb blues
Thanks Art. I appreciate your words. This hasn't been a good last year. You of all people, know that. I look forward to this direction reversing itself...and it will. It's not if it's whenWow Rik! I just saw this thread. Sorry to hear about the crash. I like your attitude though, this hobby has a big risk/reward factor, we know that going in. Think of it as a new opportunity to make the tank even better than before (as difficult as that will be).
I do know that Ramon and much thanks. Do you remember if you picked up a frag of my red planet from me way back when?Rik. You know you can always count on me to help you restock your tank. Just let me know when you're ready and you can swing by and take whatever you want.
