Timor wrasse info

That's a female, fwiw.

I've kept a pair of them for.... about 3 years? Around that time frame; I'd have to go back and look.

I've got no special advise beyond the typical Halichoeres care info; they've been very easy for me. The court each other daily, chasing each other in circles. They switch off who's chasing who too. Males are quite a bit different in appearance; at a glance you wouldn't even think they're the same species.

The male get more interesting colors as usual? Yeah I just like to read up as much as possible on everything and only having seen a couple of these on the forum and none in real life, I was worried there might be some special requirements or something. Surprised they aren't more common, I think even the female is quite nice looking.

I suspect once-upon-a-time their early collection was done incorrectly (cyanide?) and very minimal survived, and hence were overlooked for years. The only historic piece of literature I ever found was "best left in the ocean", whereas all the other common Halichoeres alongside them were listed as "acceptable" for captivity. I can say my experienced couldn't render that any more untrue.

I can't say which is better looking; male or female. Here's the holotypes which are true to form, minus some brilliance:

I have some photos of my own buried on photobucket I can dig up later.

I have had one for about 6 months. Female as well. Eats pellets and mysis. Mine is in with a dusky wrasse. No aggression to anything in the tank. Nice active fish.

Good stuff to know. I saw that "best left in the ocean" phrase which might have worried me a little. Mine arrives today, along with 2 claudias. I have a Quarantine tank full of wrasses. Prazi pro will be in order shortly. :)

I picked up mine from a LFS who had it Id'd wrong. I personally had never seen nor heard of one. i later figured out the fish had no lower jaw. Not sure if i did this when transfering using net or if it was like that when purchased. Even with no lower jaw this fish eats anything i put into the tank. very healthy and active fish. Tank mates are dusky wrasse, flame angel, swallowtail angel, square tail bristle tooth tang, midas blenny and one-spot foxface. 0 issues with any tank mates and one of my favourite fish. Eats more types of food then the Dusky wrasse who at this stage only eats mysis.

I got him in today, he seems healthy and is eating right off the bat. Quite aggressive at the mysis too bashing it around to break it up and such. His belly is huge, I'm hoping its from eating a lot, and not from bloat or something.

The claudias that were supposed to arrive and QT with him were not so good. I got them from R2G because thats the only place I could find them in stock. They did not put heat in the box! One was DOA and the other barely alive on arrival, he's a goner too. Very sad, I usually have had good experience with R2G but this was a bad mistake on their part.

Sorry for your loss :(

That's good news about the Timor though, my radiant from DD was a great ester right off the bat too. Hope he continues to do well for you!

How is the wrasse doing??????

I think I had an ammonia issue in qt and lost him. I had an ammonia alert badge but I suspect it was no good. I lost both fish same day in qt with no disease symptoms so ammonia is the only thing I could think it was. Finding another has been impossible since then too.

Sorry to hear that, sucks. I too have never seen another one either. Mine is growing and still eats everything lol.

pretty sure they are still there, and there isnt alot of info out there but do assume not much different from any other halichorus species, and looks much better in person
i tried to get that guy to buy one ^^^^

Very easy fish to keep. Eats anything from nori, pellets, flakes and frozen. Much nicer looking fish in person. Mine is very active all the time. Just make sure you have the proper sand bed for them
