Tim's 135g Tank Build

Tim, is this pukanni or reef safe rock from BRS? did you have to cure it ? what I mean is, if you had to acid wash or seed it in salt water for a few weeks, to check for PO2 leakege. This is what a lot of reefers are doing now with these types of rocks. long term, this is a better option. IMO. Greetings.

Tristan66,

It's the ReefSaver rock from BRS. I'm just doing the curing process they suggested in their video which is putting the rock in heated water with circulation, adding some water from a recent water change of the old tank, and let it cycle for about 2-3 weeks.

Eric,

Yeah, I'm getting the AI LEDs with the rails.

By the way, I'm using the pre-rinsed aragonite sand from MacroRocks and it is really great so far. Very little clouding of the water.

Looks, great, now begins the patience game and making sure your levels are all there, the most frustrating part. But alls well that begins well.

You are right about the patience part of this now. Unlike my first tank though, at least I have another tank in the house to keep me busy until the new one is ready. :spin1:

Very nice Tim!!! Your patients is paying off big time and the rockscape looks great! Did you go with the aqua illumination LEDs?

Jay

Thanks for the compliments.

Yeah, I'm going to be getting the Aqua Illuminations LEDs. Hopefully my last major purchase for this build.:bounce1:

Your gonna love the AIs the lighting is intense I am running mine at 75% and they are extremely bright. i added the T5 supplement just to make sure i don't lose any color in my corals...I can tell you that the AI controller can be somewhat of a pain at times...I currently use my Apex to control the lights.

Pedro,

As far as Corals I'm definitely going to be getting some SPS. As far as fish go I'm not sure right now but that was the biggest reason for the new tank to begin with. it will finally feel good to go to one of our LFS and look at some fish that I can really add to the tank without worrying about overpopulating.(at least for now) LOL.:spin3:

Snag

Snag

well everything had been going along so well(albeit slow) for so long I guess I should have expected something would pop up and slow things down and it did. had the tank and sump all filled and did a check on ALL plumbing and came up with no leaks(that was the good part). then decided to let the system go and found the little giant external pump I have for the system is not gonna cut it.(Need more power...gph etc.). Overflows overwhelm the pump every time. Bad part is I had the little giant hard plumbed in. Sooooooooooooooooooo, I ordered and almost new(like new) pump(Eheim compact 5000) and will just have to wait till that comes in a couple of days to see how I can plumb it into my system with the least amount of work/difficulty. Meanwhile.....I'm finishing up putting in the reefkeeper and it's modules under the stand along with the Vortech controllers/power units. Fun Huh?:uhoh2:

Glad there was no leaks! I hate leaks! You are going to love the Eheim pump! They are silent and are the most energy efficient pump in the world. Its too bad I drilled the side of the refuge though but me might be able to use it for something? Thanks

A drilled fuge aint bad....you can always put a bulk head on there and then cap it. Or bulk head with a few a adapters to feed a uv sterilizer into the system. Many options to explorer. Or just use it for something else as Steffen stated.

Well originally it was drilled for the little giant but unfortunately it held up to its name being to little. lol It already have the bulkhead and the piping but will probably be capped off. I am not a fan of UV sterilizers because it kills and good with bad and believe for a Reef tank there is no added benefit to them.

Tim you could use the the little giant to run the several reactors that you will be using but i dont know if it will be worth it verse using a maxi jet? Thanks

Steffen Sparks

Actually, the Eheim 5000 can be used externally or internally and it will be easier for me to use the plumbing I already have in place to hook the thing up externally. If not, I'll put it in the sump and plug the bulkhead for now. :spin1:

New Pump

New Pump

I'm still waiting on the Eheim pump to come in. Should be here tomorrow. In the meantime just to satisfy my own curiosity I threw the mag 5 pump I have in the sump and just ran a piece of flexible tubing up into the main tank again to see what happens. that pump is rated at 500gph. It almost does it just needs a little more power to do it without making the drains gasp for more water. I figure I need a pump that can do a minimum of 600 gph to keep the 1" drains coming out of the 1.5" bulkheads happy. When I hook it into the hard pluming it will need a little more than that I'm thinking to push the needed return water back up thru the "T" which splits it to the two returns. The Eheim is suppose to be adjustable anywhere between 660 and 1320gph so hopefully I should be able to dial it in exactly where I need it. We'll see. Anyway, the tank is cycling for now. :hmm2:
