Tiny Might skimmer rockin'

I think it might, but I don't know with 100% certainty.

It seems that everyone with the 2" instrument reports that it jumps around about +/- 5% of the actual reading. With a longer scale this bobbing of the float will be less significant since it will bounce between two values much closer to what you're trying to measure.

yup... with a displacement instrument like this... the longer the scale the less error (at least in the reading) you have. Reading error and precision (intrument accuracy) are totaly seperate though (before anybody jumps on me for saying or infering different)

Well hopefully this will give a close enough reading to let everyone know how much tail the tiny might is kicking, +/- 5% that is!

It probably will. You can overcome the reading error by taking a large number of separate readings. If you send me a list of readings I can work out the mean (any chimp can do this) as well as the error bound (not many chimps can do this). This error bound allows us to say "there is a 95% chance that the true value is between x and y". The more readings you give me, the smaller the range between x and y.

I know this is flirting with being too technical for reefkeeping but I don't see the harm in taking very careful measurements.

the one benefit to the set up smjtkj is running is the air pump. the meter wont jump as bad with the air pump. just don't do what I did and blast the little ball right out the end of the meter. oops. I grabbed the wrong meter and blew it up with the sl56 sweet water pump.

things seam to be coming along very nicely with this little experiment. we can honestly say this is a 100% diy skimmer. right down to the hart of the skimmer. the tiny might! I feel this is the first of its kind out there. and I feel after the results are all in we as a group will have accomplished something very special. i feel this skimmer of smut's needs to be nominated for thread of the month. its a true work of art and with the help and support of all the hard core DIYers here its just about finished.

Ever noticed that DIY threads never get thread of the month. Most RC's prefer to read about mantis shrimp or an octopus...Guess I just don't understand.

I just wanted to report a little something I observed since adding the extra air yesterday. It seems the diffuser plate is having a little bit of foam building up on the inner edges. It is like it is not allowing the bubbles to flow causing a bit of foam to form. Maybe the air has surpassed the amount that the holes will allow. Not hurting performance as far as I can tell. Just wanted to mention it. Maybe a little larger holes are needed.

I just cleaned the cup this morning, and adjusted it for a little wetter skimmate. I was curious how it worked skimming a little wetter. But we will see what we have in the morning. Pics will be up in the morning. Well it is late guys, I am gonna hit the sack!

I have to say some of you guys take this stuff to umphteen level:lol:   Since we are not taking the deserved recognition for the innovations on the design, I would like to start naming things from here on. The heat sink will be called the dgasmd disposable energy extractor. We will call the tiny might the foam capacitor junior. The supercharging concept of the skimmer will be called the spazz foamilation engine. The use of the sequence dart for one of these skimmers will be called the foam capacitor master. How is that for credits

smjtkj could you snap a pic of the diffuser for me and see if you can get the pic of what you were talking about. i guess im not quite sure what your refering to or what its doing.

Scott here is a pic, not a very good one. The bubbles are so dense and moving in the diffuser chamber that the camera has a hard time focusing.

How about some skimmate production pictures in the morning smjtkj?
Here is the skimmate from testerday morn at about 7AM to today
11AM. I would say she can skim wet too! I should probably call it semi wet. I have to say I was a bit surprised to see the amount already in the cup!

ok this is a problem. your at the limit of the diffuser. you need to remove the diffuser and drill the holes out to the next size above those holes. i dont rember what size they are so you will have to figure that one out. by drilling them bigger you will decrease any bach pressure on the pump and mabe increase its ability to handle more air. it would be nice if you didnt have to blead off any air from the air pump. i know you said your not bleading much. but i would rather not waist the electricity to pump waisted air. yes im being a spazz about this but why not. lets see how effecient this skimmer can get. hey may be the wattage will drop down some more. i bet it drops 2 watts after everythig is said and done.

now you know where i got the name spazz:lol:
darn brother inlaws can never shut up!

Oh my God! Drill all those Spazz amount of holes! I may get spastic by the time I finish all of them. Ha! Ha! So what ya think about the skimmate production? I am pumped!

well the skimmate production is really crappy! literally! ha ha ha ha ha you might want to stick your nose in there and take a big sniff of success! ha ha ha ha ha

that's awesome! but now remember when this bad boy strips your system of all its nutrients the skimmate production will decrease. I have seen it a bunch of times. a lot of people think there skimmer is not performing like it use to. so they mess with it and screw things up. as long as your not scraping the glass every two weeks its working pretty darn good.

as far as drilling all those holes...... have fun and good luck!

ya I know I'm an a$$. my bad. I recommend drilling the outer 3 rings of holes and see how that works. then do more if needed. there is only about 700 holes in that plate. come on it wont be that bad.

Yeah, I remember when the skimmate production fell to nothing on the monster airstone. If I am taking this thing apart I will drill all of the holes! It is not exactly a 2 minute process to take this thing apart! Ha! Ha!
