To crab or not to crab that is the question

Ok my tank has been setup for quite awhile and I think its time for a CUC. So I'm looking at buying one and curious what people think of hermits as part of a CUC. I have a ton of really nice Acans and don't want any problems. I'm particularly interested in some Scarlet Hermits.

Im sure some others can give more insight but i have some red scarlets and they dont touch the 2 acans i have at all. Granted its only 2 acans, but i havent had any issues.

I've had both blue legs and red legs. The red legs never gave me any trouble. The blue legs tend to wipe out my snail population (all of my hermits now live in the shells of former CUC members). But they've never pestered my coral at all... though they occasionally like to go Gorgonian Climbing.

My snail list is 12 Banded Trochus and 12 Nerite Snails and 12 of the scarlets. The Banded Trochus have the abuility to right themselves so it should be harder for any hermit to attack and kill. I did have some in my 90 when it was setup and had no problems with them attacking snails or corals but I didn’t have any Acans back then either. Kept allot of empty shells around

What about a cucumber or a conch they are great cleaners. I prefer blue legs instead of the red legs..in my experience the reds are more aggressive and will attack other shelled tank mates..jmo

Thanks Henry my tank is too small for a cucumber IMO. The conch sounds interesting hadn't thought about them. Never had any blue leg hermits but I did have scarlet ones in my 90 and don't remember having any problems at all with them killing snails. Could they have killed some sure"¦ as a mater of fact if my memory serves me right I saw no difference after adding them and that's why I'm considering them now. I'm mostly worried about my Acans.

I have two emerald crabs. They don't use shells so they leave my snails alone. I have two Acans and they have never bothered them, or any other coral for that matter.

I used to have the same opinion until I witnessed a biggun ripping tentacles out of my Todd's torch. He was evicted with extreme prejudice. He was pure evil, he'd lived through like 6 different rounds of interceptor. Regardless of the "one bad apple" theory, he made em all suspect.

Gonna toss in a few scarlets for kicks on my new tank FWIW.

Wellll dam it... some of you have me second guessing it now. Why is there never an easy answer in this hobby? And cully I have a really nice torch thanks for telling me something I didn't want to hear lmao. You're such a downer man JK. My luck of the draw would be getting that one bad apple. Really tho thanks all of you for the good info. I only have one defender of the reef (6 line wrasse) so there is not a lot of left overs after feeding anyway. Cleaned out a very very bad flat worm infestation by the way so if you ever get them they work great.
