To filter sock, or not to filter sock

I only use a sock in the outflow from our skimmer. Since it is rated for 800 GPH flow through our tank water gets pretty well polished by the filtersock. By using on the output of the skimmer, the majority of the gunk is exported in the skimmate and we don't have to change our filter sock but every week or so.. sometimes more often, rarely less often. And we clean/reuse our socks, and soaking them overnight in RO/DI has always been a part of our regime :).

I put them in the washer with bleach, rinse them twice.
I don't dry them and recommend that none of you do either.
Hang them to dry.

Sean

Line dry in the sun is the best, if possible, as it will/should help remove the last remnants of chorine bleach from the socks.

I use 100 micron filter pads on all my tanks. I clean them once a day in RO/DI water and replace them with new pads once a week.

I've never had measurable nitrate.

Rob,
I would get 4-6 just so when you toss them in the washer you don't feel like you are wasting water. ;)
The size of your sump will depend on the length of the bag.
Stick with the drawstring type and 50 microns.

I run Socks 24/7. I have 4 that I cycle. I hand wash mine then soak them in bleach/water for a few days then rinse, dechlorinate and hang dry. My NO3 is zero. My PO4, however is .05ppm. I cant get it any lower for some reason.

I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t use socks pads or a skimmer.

LOL and it seems your getting great colors too (I checked your gallery)

How many fish and how much do you feed? What is your filtration? How large WC's?

I have a 180 that has had this fish
list in it for over three years. Some
of the fish I have had over five years.
Just running a refugium no skimmer
or anything else. 15 to 20 gallon water
changes every three to four months.
I have a mixed reef with acroporas and
other sps, lps, leathers and clams,
corals are all doing great.
Kalkwasser drip 24/7 is the only addition.
2 clowns
1 blond naso
1 hippo tang
1 yellow tang
3 purple tangs
2 blue throat triggers male and female
1 coral beauty
1 fox face
1 six line wrasse
1 Bicolor Pseudochromis
1 Royal Gramma
1 canary goby
1 yellow tail damsel
4 cleaner neon gobies

I would do more water changes but Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m very lazy.

Still running with the sock and no N03 or Phos. I change them every 2-3 days and also wash with bleach and dryer to dry. I also place my carbon bag in the sock as well.

I run 100 micron felt socks. No nitrate. I change them every4 days which is when one of them first begins to overflow. I clean them by turning them inside out and jetting them with tap water then letting them air dry. No problems with brittle rings. I buy them from www.filterbag.com
