What size tank are we talking about?
I have one of these on my sump and it works very well.

Because corals in the wild are able to withstand a 12 degree fluctuation in one hour does not necessarily mean that corals in our tanks that are used to a stable temperature can. I would not reccommend quick temperature changes if they can be avoided.
