To much flow?

I have a 72 gallon (bowfront) tank. It is currently a FOWLR setup and it has a mag 9.5 as a return from the sump, and 3 maxi-jet 1200's in the tank. My question is: is this to much flow? I don't have corals so I know I don't need this much. The fish have a strong tendency to stay on the opposite end of the tank from the return line and the side with 2 of the 3 powerheads. Could the amount of flow in the tank be bothering the fish?

Ok, It is a little late for me now, but I will definetly work with that tomarrow (afterall, it has been likethis for 1 1/2 yrs, it can last one more night)

Definantly not too much, even FOWLR can benefit from increased tank flow IMO. Keep wastes suspended so they can be filtered out instead of sitting on the bottom and rotting.

take out 2 of the maxijets, install a highflow kit from triton aquatics and increase the flow significantly over what's there. Most fish love flow. Give us a list and see. Puffers don't like "too" much but there are some out there that can't get enough

I would take out at least one maxi-jet. For a 72 gal SPS tank, 2 maxi-jet 1200 are enough. The behavior of your fish are not normal.

I have a 58 gal w/ 6900gph w/ return and powerheads. My fish swim fine. Just angle the flow off the glass.

Its not a matter of flow, I think its a matter of the core of the flow.

You need a gentle flow. Go for the mod that fat_tony explained above.

:eek2: :eek2: Are you kidding?!
Correct me if I am wrong. 2 Maxi-jet has 2 x 300 gph = 600 gph. 600 gph / 72 gal = 8.33 gph to 1 gal of water. I am under the impression that SPS needs 10:1 of water flow. 8.33 is less than 10, but close enough. Right?

40x or more for happy SPS.

To the OP, perhaps your livestock don't like the difference in flow between one end of your tank and the other. Could you balance the flow a bit more? I don't think you have too much flow...
