Too Hot???

my tank has been hovering around 85' and I have been doing the floating ice bag thing and using a clip on fan blowing over the tank. is there anything else I can do to get the tank temp any lower? also is 85' considered too high? :)
 
it is surely not perfect...and it may be a bit too high...probably stressing the fish depending what you normally keep it at but id personally bring it down to 82...more fans/ice bags is all you can do...or a nice cool WC
 
If the base tank temperature is 82 F, like mine, 85 F is not a problem, in my experience. I would watch the animals closely, though.
 
the temp came down to 82 and this may sound corny, but I looked my freezer and found an 8 pack of frozen corn on the cobb...I put it in 2 ziplock bags and that plus the fan and floating ice bags seemed to work..I guess were having "corn" for dinner :)
 
someone just posted a thread for a fan by stanly..the thread name is something like "cool your tank by 5 degrees"...its just a really strong fan..try that..it will help evap water faster, which is what you want to keep the temp down. If the humidity in the room is too high tho, it will stop evaporating and wont cool any more...might get hotter actually...my room is sealed so the humidity is prolly like 80 or so in ther lol, but at nights i just open the window, and it dries out...try it.

also, someones proly already posted this..havent looked yet lol..but if you have a glass top on the tank, that WILL hold heat in...so will a canopy that isnt properly ventilated.
 
Sir Dudeguy, thanks for the tip, I will probably pick one of those up tomorrow plus I think maybe one of those battery powered generators...just in case of a power outtage! I think I can get one at the local supply sergant.
 
I'm down in alabama, and we've been having near 100 deg days every day for a while, and my AC isn't that great. I've come home from work to find the tank REALLY hot! It tends to hover around 85 deg, but I've seen it get to 90 once. I've had two polyp bail-outs from the heat. My solution has been to put a 1 gal block of ice in the sump, just barely in the water, so as it melts it will cool the tank off. I've also shortened my photo-period down to 8 hrs on PCS and 6 hrs on MH. Lights are a huge heat source for me, 250 watt DE MH and 180 watts of PCs on a 29 gal.
Also I make sure the computer and all room lights are off before I leave. Esp the computer, a 450 watt power supply, even when just idleing will warm a room by a few degrees.
 
Tagging along agian :) I keep doing the ice/fan thing and i have only see it come down to 82....now its at 84...YIKES..I just wish summer would end :)
 
I was having a problem with temps too. Almost splurged for a chiller after 3 days of 85+ temps in my tank. So I removed the heater, and come to find out my heater was running all of the time even when the indicator was off. Now temps are back to normal. I know it has been hot outside but dont overlook mechanical failures as I did. I sure am glad I figured that out before spending uneccesary cash.
 
Geez, go figure something as simple as a heater can do soooo much damage this time of year...I am gonna unplug it now..I am with ya on the chiller...but for a 46 gal tank....seems a little pricey..hehe :)
 
I want a big tank now..lol :D im kinda on the fence of just buying one, but.......you know there are no good CHEAP chillers..and as i have learned it does not pay to skimp on anything SW related. so here I am hoping the ice/fan thingie will work :)
 
lol...just build one of those walk-in fridges that the supermarket uses for the meat/milk sections lol.you could just build that around your tank lol..then since its cold in the room, you could also get some penguins if you wanted :)
