the only thing better then that is seeing a very very hungry 4.5" female peacock come out and grab a live damsel without striking it and eating it alive like mine did lol

nice...that sounds awesome! i would love to watch a mantis take down a live damsel. that's just gory and cool. can't wait until i get a peacock...

my wennerae tank had 3 damsels originally (named "Breakfast", "Lunch", and "Dinner"...lol) and now one is missing. i assume the wennerae got it, and i would have liked to see that. especially since the damsel and the wennerae are roughly the same size ;)

it is cool watching the chiragra eat turbo snails, but have not been able to get a pic or video of that yet. she bashes them open to get the snail's body, then just keeps smashing away until the shell is pretty much powdered. the inside of her den looks like it is covered in silver glitter from all the tiny shell fragments! i tried to lure her out with a snail today, but apparently she was in a lazy mood and just wanted the easy pickings. thawed krill is like the stomatopod version of "fast food", i guess. oh well...

i finally just got my peacock back over to eating snails and in the last week she has decimated the snail population i thought would last at least a month, she was eating about 1.5 snails a day, all of which are giant turbo snails over 1" in diameter, jumbo ceriths, and red footed conchs she is definitely quite a beast, and doesnt have the same scared/cautious attitude that most peacocks have, since she has molted i have yet to go a night without hearing a couple loud smacks on her cave and the rubble in the tank

Im curious ive heard they can crack or break aqaurium glass, and if they can arnt you Mantis owners afraid????

The glass smashing thing is restricted to the very large individuals of large species like G. chiragra and O. scyllarus (peacock).

Most other species stay smaller and aren't capable of smashing a turbo's shell, let alone glass. To be on the safe side i usually recommend thicker glass for any mantis, but the paranoid (like me) just go for acrylic.

So no, with the proper research and knowing what you're getting, we aren't worried about smashed glass.

That wennerae is AWESOME!! What's the minimum tank size for something like that?

I have a spare 5gallon laying around I was thinking of using for some very small growing african cichlids but a small mantis tank would be really cool

infalibe-one--
me, steal your mantis?!? how dare you! (he is still in there, i promise...yeah, that's right, i'm sure he's just "molting"...yeah, that's it...) heh heh heh.
seriously though, any pics of your wennerae yet? i remember we were discussing wennerae tank setup a few threads back...before i got my wennerae. that was the species i was planning to get next, and luckily the unidentified mantis i ordered turned out to be a wennerae :)

Rewd--
thanks, glad you like the wennerae!
you could keep a wennerae in a 5 gal--that should be fine. they are a cool species, and supposedly are more interactive, although mine has been pretty shy so far. not as bad as my chiragra, which i only ever see at feeding time, and then only a glimpse. i see the wennerae's eyes peeking out of her den, and when i am watching her, she will come further out of her den to watch me. but she rarely leaves her little cave (feeding time again, what a surprise.)
i really like them though, and hopefully they will get bolder as time goes on...they are awesome pets, and i would definitely recommend them. i have had a lot of different marine fish and inverts over the years (mostly evil predatory stuff) and mantis are by far the coolest!
