Basement frag tanks and qt.

Tank to the right is the qt tank. It is a 29 gallon with hob filter. I use a piece of seeded sponge from the fluval coanister filter on the upstairs 120g to start denitrification.I also use some carbon when not treating.
I have learned the hard way not to mess with quarantine proceedures and do qt all new fish for 4 weeks. I make the tank as comfortable as possible with pvc or plastic artifical corals for hiding or resting places. I'll even put in a tupperware container full of sand for fish that need it or a piece of live rock. If I need to treat I'll remove calcerous materials which would absorb medications.
I monitor ammonia with a test kit and an ammonia alert badge. It's almost never a problem. I do water changes 1x or 2x per week at 25%. I also have some ten gallon tanks that I sometimes use as treatment tanks depending on the length of the treatment and size of the fish being treated. One of thing I learned on these boards to my great relief is that nitrite is not toxic to marine fish for all practical purposes. Not messing with nitrite makes qt management much easier.

That's it for tonight. thanks for looking. Please fell free to ask questions or offer suggestions.

A final word. The Zebrasomma desjardinii in the 40g long ( a 4 foot tank) is up for adoption to a concientous aquarist with a 6 foot tank or larger. It is healthy and a great grazer. This is a rescue fish that I am very fond of so I won't sell it at the lfs. I'd rather give it to someone who can care for it properly and maybe return a frag . The tank it is in is really too small for it. This fish was brought to Salt Water Paradise by a customer. It was torn up and appeared infected. It had no sail , almost no tail and very little pectoral fins. Joe was going o put it in the freezer. I took it home. QTd it , treated it with Furan 2, then some copper as ich appeared. Then two weeks in melafix. I've been caring for it for about 9 months and as you can see it is healthy and has most of it's tissue back.

Wonderful setup. Do you ever have problems with RBTA in the 90g stinging the nearby corals?
:) Thanks. It's pretty well settled in and hasn't moved in more than 4 years. It took some trial and error but at this point it doesn't like to touch the corals that are near it and I have boxed it in with uncomfortable rock structure to its right. It has split numerous times. Then the fun starts since some of the newly split anemones move until I can remove them.

Absolutely beautiful tanks Tom. :)

Thanks for taking the time to walk us all through your system. Very informative... that's an extremely well thought out system.

I may have missed it, so forgive me if I did, but did you post what type of lighting you run over the tanks?

Not yet , the tour is still in progress, I still have to post pictures of the 120g and some equipment, tank by tank. The lighting is abvariety of mh/ actinic(vho/pc) and some led combinations.

looks great Tom, love the coral and fish pictures. the Zebrasomma desjardinii looks healthy as can be. Tagging along for the rest of the tour :)

fantastic setup Tom-----I continue to learn from you every day, a great mentor and respected reefer.

BTW
the plastic tote---I went through one in two weeks by adding some Haitian rock to it---a sharp corner pierced it right where those folds or indents are in the bottom.

:D Scott, Thanks for the tip on the tote , I had never given it a thought.

WOW, thats all I can say. this is like, my dream reef!
:D Glad you like it.

Sweet set-up Tom! You should charge an admission fee. How does the ASM perform for that volume of water you have? I have the same skimmer for my 260 (total water volume around 340G)and just seems that I could get more out of it.

Chris

Performs quite well. But I just upgraded by adding a second one. My water volume is about 600gal so a single asm4x rated at 450 seemed a bit light, I added another 4x just a few days ago. The new one comes with the 15000 sedra pump which does 1500gph . The older one has the 9000 pump which does 900 gph. You can really see the difference between the two with the 15000 creating many more bubbles.

Yea, I have the sedra 15000 pump and it really pulls a lot of gunk, but just seems it can do so much more. I didn't think about it but it could be that I only have 5 fish in the aquarium 2 being tangs. So I guess I dont have that big of a bioload yet.

Tom what happened here?this tour seems toi end rather abruptly and before you showed them the good stuff.

I got a little busy with family stuff. I'll pick it up soon.
