Ok , time to bump this post. Here's a mapquest link for my Back road to the back road secret short cut. actually it's the only way i have gone, so i can't compare to the standard route of 13 south to 50 west to the Docs.
the way i have gone, because it looks shorter, is get off 13 south to Laurel, a quick slide through the nice little town and pick up the sharptown road west to MD 313 south. take that till it ends at rte 54 , then a 100 yards right to rte 50, cross 50 into mardela, and a left at the old church , i believe, to the doc.

it's a nice open country ride from laurel west and south. and we won't miss the mardela turn off, like some people have said they did coming west on 50.
anyone else familiar with this route? hmmm lets see if the link carries my zoom and slide.

) so ill have to drive the work van to meet up with everyone. and trust me the work van is nothing anyone would want to do a 2 hour drive in (including me)
