Transferring Tanks, 6 carpets

I might be doing a tank transfer and trying to plan ahead if I am going to go through with it.

I plan on doing the transfer in one day. Same sump, same live rock etc.

Four questions:

1) Should I transfer the sand bed from old tank to new (stir it up and clean it first) or should I purchase new live sand?

2) Any tips I should keep in my mind for when transferring carpets?

3) Is it safe for the carpets to do this (all in one day along with everything else)?

4) If I am going to add a few large pieces of bleached, dried, ro soaked, dead rock along with the live rock in the current tank will this have any effect on the carpets?

Unless your sand bed isn't that old or dirty I'd buy all new sand. Too cheap to cause yourself and your nems that kind of headache

I have never kept carpets but since you're doing a direct transfer you will see no cycle. I would also not use any live sand as it's more than likely dead and would cause a cycle. I also think you're fine as long as the new rock has been soaked and cultured before adding it to the new tank. Don't want to go from dry to the DT. So I'd actually have the new dry rock in a tub with heater and saltwater to the mix you intend on using.

If I were in your situation... (I have 4 carpets, so maybe one day..) I would set up a few small QTs and keep the carpet in there. I'll do a few days of ammonia/nitrate check before throwing the carpets back in.

as long as you have plenty of fresh salt water, your carpets will be fine.

if you lack lights, put them near the window

also I would use brand new sand like Dkuhlmann mentioned.. old sand could cause nitrate spike.

Be very careful when transfer the fish. Maybe you should have strawberry baskets to put on the carpets to keep fish from being kill and eaten by your carpets

Also they may move around till they get settled again, so you may want to watch your powerheads if you have them.

They are all S. Haddoni and I have decided to go with new sand. Probably will use caribsea live sand

Strawberry baskets are a good idea, thank you Minh

QT for each would be ideal, but I do not have the equipment for all six of them to be separate - I wish I did

Unfortunately, it appears two of my carpets (my red and green) are showing signs of illness. The water is fine and I am guessing it might have been the food. The red has been with me for years and the green of at least 11 months. Green has always looked great until recently and now the red. I am not sure if it requires treatment or not, but just posted a thread on it. Could too strong of halides cause this? (I recently changed from radium 400 watt 20k to hamilton 400 watt 20k and the hamilitons are much, much brighter)
