Transporting Fish

Hi all,


Imh going to be moving in 6 months (about 7.5 hour drive). Im going to do it in stages, and the last part is moving the fish., my lfs will hold the fish for me and then pack them up for me. They said you dont need to pump oxygen in the bag that regular atmospheric air is fine. That true?

It's probably short enough drive...shippers pack with oxygen cuz it's spending more time in the bag eh?

They do make it through 24-30 hour trips to reach us. Are you transporting them in sealed bags? I've never done that long of a trip but I figure a few 5 gallon buckets with open tops shouldn't be an issue as long as they're stored snugly.

I wouldn't trust it. Oxygen is easy and cheep to purchase at a welding supply shop. Regulators are cheep from harbor freight. It is also nice to have O2 handy during power outages. Do risk it. Buy oxygen and bag the fosh

Pack them in oxygen. Atmospheric gas different chemical compounds in it such as nitrogen and only about 20/21% 02, whereas when a fish is packed properly for transport, its it just oxygen gas added,which in turn makes it so that the fish does not suffocate from a lack of oxygen.

Was gona pack the fist in the bags from the store...may have to try and get oxygen...its an 8 hour drive...

When I transported my Haddoni from the LFS to my home, it was a two hour drive because I had to travel far to get the nem! I used a car power DC inverter like this: https://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-300W-Power-Inverter-Adapter/dp/B004MDXS0U

I plugged in a heater to keep the nem happy. He is living well now.

I imagine you could plug in a small heater and air pump in a 5 gallon bucket or a 10 gallon container or something, and that should keep them happy? Get the right wattage inverter.

I would go with the 5g bucket (with lids) method as well. I've done the 24hr straight through trip from the Fla Keys to Ohio several times with fish that way and never lost one. Either an inverter or battery operated air pumps and you'll be fine.

Just did a 1000 miles with a 40g coleman cooler. Inverter, pumps with stones and a heater. Added a power head mid trip.

Pro tip, don't fill past 2/3 thirds.

That's the thing about panic braking; you don't typically get to choose when you need to.

What worked for me was using 5 gallon buckets with lids 2/3 filled. Pull into a rest stop every few hours and using a cup scoop water out of a bucket and pour the water back into it from above. This will oxygenate the water again for a few more hours. I had the SUV heaters on so high to keep the buckets warm, I had to drive wearing shorts in the winter time back to NJ.
