Travis and Jessica's 400G Build

Ian was pretty cool when we were up there :)

Yeah was going to be 3/4" hahah

Glad it was 1/2"... we had to flip the tank to get it into the office in our house... not easy with even 4-5 people.

My wife got mad at me for not helping on that bit. I think I just freaked a bit and took a step back to make sure it wasn't going to get dropped. Doesn't really make sense to me now... just what happened...

LOL! When we moved ours into the house as we were lifting it up onto the stand my suction cup let go. I almost crapped my pants. Luckily the guy right next to me was my tough as nails construction buddy and he took all the weight of our end while I re suctioned it back on at warp speed. It was CRAZY. No time to think while its all going down either.

Any idea when you're supposed to get your hands on the new tank?

They started building it in the beginning of June and I think the silicone needs to cure for 2 weeks or so. I am guessing sometime in July maybe. And thats ok, because we have a big mess to clean up with a new display stand to build and some new obstacles to maneuver around. The rock glued together with 9 sticks of JB water weld has me worried, I was going to dremel it apart with a cut off wheel but now I am thinking hammer and sharp chisel. We don't want the cut off wheel fragments flying around everywhere into the rock and sand. We also need to figure out what to do about the two 100g water storage tanks now that we have to lower the sump stand. They wont fit underneath the sump anymore, might have to put them in the basement with a pump and set up a switch in the fish room or something. We didn't want anything in the house besides the display, but we may have to sacrifice on that one. There's just not enough room in the fishroom.

I have been putting this tank project off and focusing on a few other projects for the time being. Hopefully we can get everything figured out and accomplished soon and quickly though.

Update.

Sorry for the wait. Thanks for checking in Steve. New tank is up on the stand and plumbed. Rock is re-worked. Fish are all in the display tank since last Wednesday night. Stand is trim-less, the trim is pretty beat up from pulling it all off to rebuild the stand width. We have 2 rw15's in the tank now on high and those are blowing the sand into dunes, will add the 2 rw20's soon. In the photo the glass is dirty from filling 50g at a time with pre mixed saltwater. Fish room is running, the regal 250 is pumping out the skim. Sump stand is rebuilt much lower, need to figure out a new spot to keep the water barrels now. Qt's are empty. Still need to get a bunch of stuff organized and do some wire management, but at least we are moving water. :D

We still need to build a canopy so we can get the lights on and get the corals transferred into the display tank. Trying to decide if we want to do cabinet doors for access inside the canopy or a hinged opening lid type of setup. Suggestions welcome!

looks awesome!!!! love that sump!!!! I had thought about building one just like that but was too intimidated by it and didn't want to take any chances. Looks like you did an amazing job!

Thanks Steve!!! The sump was a bit of a project. Made a few mistakes along the way but it turned out great. It wasn't really difficult to build but just took so long because each epoxy pour had to dry before the next pour could be done. At one point I was honestly wondering what I had gotten myself into building the sump, but now that its finished we are happy with it. We can't wait to get our corals out of the sump and into the display so we can use the extra space in the sump for doing frags and stuff. :)

Hows that collection cup cleaner. Is that the actual Reef Octopus one or a third party like Avast Marine Works? I need to get one as I slack on cleaning that. I really dont do much work at all on the tank lol, the more automation the better.

Here are a few more photos. Once we get the lights on we will get some more detailed shots of the rockwork, its just too hard with the reflections.

any updates?????

Well tank has been running for almost a year now. No problems at all. Have only done one 100g water change and two 50g waterchanges, so it could be looking a little better. Kind of got it all going and let it run on autopilot besides feeding and refilling the top off barrel. All the fish are healthy haven't added any more. Got the stand and canopy all finished. Put most the corals in but since we haven't done many water changes they could be looking better.

Will get a photo up when I get a chance.

Here is a quick cell phone photo of the stand/canopy. The panels are removable for access, made them magnetic for easy operation and the ability to take them completely off for good accessibility while cleaning leaning through the canopy. It also has panels on each side of the canopy as well that you cannot see in this photo. When I have some time I will get some good in depth shots of the inside of the canopy and stuff.

Would like to set up an auto waterchange setup and a real top off system sometime real soon. Our top off is a maxijet in a 45g brute on a timer using a valve on the water hose to control the amount of water flowing. LOL!

We pulled the trigger on the Genesis Renew Pro AWC system paired with the Storm Pro ATO. Also went ahead and ordered 2 100g ace roto mold vertical water holding tanks from rural king. Rural king offers free shipping on orders over $99, can't really beat that.

The AWC and ATO should arrive tomorrow. 100g water tanks said "4-6 weeks- ships directly from supplier", so who knows when those will show.
