Treating with Vitamin C

Could be a bacteria bloom caused by the dead molly.

The calcium carbonate will dissolve, just very slowly, much like fine aragonite sand (which is also made of calcium carbonate.) This undissolved "sand" could also be causing the cloudy water.

The sodium ascorbate is probably the better choice, as it is buffered with sodium bicarbonate, aka baking soda.

calcium carbonate is insoluble in water and will make water cloudy. it will also deposit on aragonite surfaces and can harden your sand. i would not use it. sodium ascorbate or magnesium ascorbate should be a better choice but keep an eye on your magnesium levels. i have not seen a change in my salinity since i started to use sodium ascorbate. if your worried, regular water changes should prevent a salinity rise.

The molly just died last night/this morning, so I don't think it's bacterial bloom. It must be the calcium carbonate then, I've already discontinued it's use and will get some sodium ascorbate instead. I'm not sure that's what's causing everything to be retracted though.

Sorry this worked out so poorly for you. This is all so experimental at the stage we're at with dosing the vitamin C. It's too bad you had to find out this way for all of us.

That makes me glad I ordered the sodium ascorbate.

I have been using the Walgreens 1000mg variety and have prior ph problems. What is the best thing to order now?

Nah, it was only $10, Ill just keep it and take it. Just sucks now I gotta wait even longer to get the other stuff.

booooooooo

I know what you mean. Got some new palys that are closing & I don't want to use the unbuffered stuff anymore. Finally got my parameters back in order.

Myrddraal, what is the Vitamin C Calcium powder your using?

How big is your tank?

Currently Im seeing better polyp extensions on my SPS, and Cloves are fully open. Im just dosing to get my growth back on my Zoas.

I have first dissolved the Vitamin C to 30mls of RO water then applied it to SW.

Myrddraal: since AeroD79 is using calcium ascorbate without issues maybe you should check your magnesium level. since your calcium was low to begin with, 350, maybe magnesium was not high enough to "hold" the extra calcium in solution and it precipitated out as calcium carbonate which im sure brought your calcium and alk down even further.

AeroD79 post your magnesium level also please. maybe Ca ascorbate is not bad after all.

Ive been testing Magnesium , Alk and Ca every other day as Im tweaking my calcium reactor

As of Sat 1/19..

Ca 440ppm
Alk 9.6 Dkh
Magnesium 1470ppm

Ph on Calcium Ascorbate 1/8 teaspoon at 30ml of RO H20 is 8.05

My Magnesium started at 900 a month ago and gradually added it so I can balance the Alk and CA to grow my sps.
