Could be a bacteria bloom caused by the dead molly.
The calcium carbonate will dissolve, just very slowly, much like fine aragonite sand (which is also made of calcium carbonate.) This undissolved "sand" could also be causing the cloudy water.
The sodium ascorbate is probably the better choice, as it is buffered with sodium bicarbonate, aka baking soda.
