Treating with Vitamin C

so i just checked the parameters in my tap water and salt mix
tap
ph 7.8
alk 6-7

salt mix
cal 300
ph 8.2
alk 11

i just did a water change and for some reason my alk rose from 15 to 16-17
how does it rise when the tap water i use to top off and the saltwater mix i use has a low alk.

i just found out the reason why my alk goes up.
turns out ph buffer increases alk. i just found that out.
that totally blows my mind as i was trying to solve the ph problem
while correcting my ph i cause another problem for myself.
haha kinda funny.
darn my tap water sucks.
and i cant afford ro or fit it anywhere.

gindobuck, what are your other tank params (nitrates and phosphates) like with using tap water? I couldn't keep anything until I switched to RO/DI. Did you check the TDS of your tap water? Just a thought..:D I was looking back through and didn't see them posted anywhere.

Yes, raising alk & pH go hand in hand.

Many folks have an RO system they just take out of their closet & hook up to their kitchen sink to make water.

Can any explain how Brightwell's vitamin C product can retain its potency if Vit C only has an 8 hr life span in water?? Am i missing something here of could the Brightwell product be impotent...

Brightwell Aquatics Vitamarin-C - Vitamin-C Supplement for all Marine Aquaria 500ml / 17o

Could just be another false product, like all those cycling products out there claming to have live nitrifying bacteria in them. Well, it was alive then it was bottled... or it's the wrong bacteria...

You don't even know how much VC is in there/ml, do you?

they show 1500 mg per Oz

but the dose amont is 2 ml per 20 gallons, does seem slike enough to have any reall effect although they say to raise the dose by double after four weeks

Ok my maths not bad, but I am dealing with just a little under 2 gal. Can someone please give me what they feel would be a best guess on this size tank.
Thanks
Daniel

Wow, that's a tough one. I'd say a pinch & work you way up to 1/16 tsp.

Puffer, I was just wondering if you could figure what the ppm of "C" would be with a pinch in Daniel62's little less than 2 gal.?

I'm at a loss....

Any one wanna give that a try?

Food for thought:

Pinch: the amount of dry spice or salt you can hold between your thumb and forefinger

So if a pinch of "Stronium Nitrate" weighs approx. (.3971) of a gram; and "Calcium Carbonate" weighs approx. (.1973) of a gram.

OK.....Sugar-.2535 of a gram and Salt-.4122 of a gram.

How much does an average size pinch of vc from i-herb weigh ?

Ok so I have to admit I have not read every post. I read the first 33 pages so far and the last 9. Please forgive me if the answer to my question has been covered.

Puffy in your early posts you mentioned that you stopped using Purigen because you thought it was removing the VC. In later posts you mentioned that you do use Purigen. I have a 140 gallon reef that for some reason can't seem to sustain a zoanthid. The fish are healthy after a year and my single leather and anemone are doing great. I had no problem with zoanthids in my 29 gallon BioCube. Part of my problem might be my parameters.

My Phosphates are between 0.3 and 0.5
Nitrates: Between 15 and 20

I had no luck with Zoanthids under 175 watt MH so I added 20000k 400watt MH.

So I think that I should consider using some form of chemical filtration to help with my parameters but I would also like to try the VC. I just ordered some from iHerb. If I use Purigen is it still useful to dose VC? Do you still use Purigen?

Thanks. I have enjoyed reading the thread.

I took some asprin

I took some asprin

All I know is 1/4 tsp is 1112mg. You figure it out smartypants.

Some one needs to check me on this:

I took this from one of your posts;

For every 100 gallons:

5 ppm ----- 1892 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 3785 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 5677 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 7570 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 9462 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 11355 mg VC
Dose 2x/day.

so for 2 gal we have:

5 ppm ----- 37.84 mg VC
10 ppm ---- 75.7 mg VC
15 ppm ---- 113.54 mg VC
20 ppm ---- 151.4 mg VC
25 ppm ---- 189.24 mg VC
30 ppm ---- 227.1 mg VC
Dose 2x/day.

I'm working with "Stronium Nitrate" right now....but for weight it should work.....A pinch was .3971 of a gram....a 1/2 tsp. is 3.2173 ......so.... half of that.....1/4 tsp should be approx. 1.60865 of a gram.....so...there should be 4.05 pinches in a 1/4 tsp. "consider it's my finger and fat thumb"

1112 mg of vc in a 1/4 tsp.....1 pinch (my pinch) should be about 274.6 mg of vc, thats over 30 ppm...in 2 gal.

SOME ONE CHECK ME ON THIS !!!!

just a pinch

just a pinch

If Daniel62 was to put a pinch in 20 ml of ro water, mix well, use only 5 ml of that it would be around 68.65 mg of vc or 8-9 ppm

use half (10 ml of the 20ml) and it should be 137.3 mg of vc or approx. 18 ppm

THIS IS FOR 2 GAL. SYSTEM

Some one verify this, please.
