Treating with Vitamin C

Sounds like you've got the "pinch" down, thanks! I hate math!!!

fredknack, Somewhere between the first 33 pages and the last 9, lots of scientific types posted & said that it was ok to continue using chemical filtration. I keep a very mixed reef & really don't want to go w/o it, so I put the Purigen back. I do dose the VC in my sump after where I have the Purigen placed, just in case.

I believe in Thiel's article he mentions removing chemical filtration but we've come a long way since his article. I have tried countless times to contact Thiel & talk to him about all of us using VC but I can't seem to find him. For all I know he's dead by now.

I would like to dose VC in my sump but there is no way to prevent it from going through the skimmer. Is this OK?

I've been treating for a few days now and have noticed improvement in all three of my zoa colonies. I will try and post some photos later.

I first noticed my zoas were not opening up as much last week, and they had the zoa pox. Small white/yellow dots on the tissue that is only visible when they are closed up.

Each of my zoas got a FW dip in RO water of matched temp/alk with lugols for 10 minutes. Every day the zoas have opened back up more and the spots have disappeared. But for the first day when I put the zoas back in the tank, they gave off so much slime that I thought they were literally going to melt and disappear.

In other threads, people are saying Furan-2 is the only thing that will cure the zoa pox, and that lugols will not work.

Well for me, the lugols-RO dip combined with Vitamin-C seems to be working so far. I have some pics that show the progression of some tiny green zoas that looked shriveled and hopeless to looking full and healthy.

So far I'm just a little bit past 5ppm twice a day (about 5000mg on my ~300gal system). Slowly working my way up by adding another tsp every day.

Of course, since I made other changes at the same time (RO-lugols dip) it makes the vitamin C testing less valuable, but I guess like Pufferpunk I just wanted to do everything in my power to ensure the zoas survival.

I now have some furan-2. I was planning on treating the zoas with it, but now I am holding off to see if they fully recover with just the VC.

My Ph always runs around 8-8.1 (even though I used kalk topoff), and so far I haven't noticed VC affects it. I have a pH monitor so I keep an eye on it.

I had to lessen the restriction on the skimmer drain to keep it from overflowing with VC, that's about the only thing I've had to watch. If it does still overflow, then I just open the cup and let it drain back to the sump.

having some trouble, fredknack ????

just hit refresh if it fails to post until it works. no need to post again since it will just spam false updates.

Thanks PufferPunk. I am going to give both the VC and the Purigen a shot. I think mixed reefs are the way to go. I will take a couple before pictures.

ReefEnabler guessed that one. I am a web programmer and and me and the web have a love hate thing going on. Mostly nowadays I just obsess about zoanthids and PVC :)

:) somedays I end up double posting even when I thought I did everything right  can't always win against teh internets.....

PufferPunk, I can thank you enough for the advice about dosing VC. I've been dosing for little over a week ( 1tsp in the am, 1tsp in the pm) and almost all of my zoos have came back to life. I've got colors I didn't even know I had. And the best thing, the whole tank looks healthier. Thanks again.

Kris

I have been dosing around a month up until last week due to a heater shorting out in my tank causing a complete tank crash. What a set back this has caused..... once i get my tank stable again i will be dosing VC. I seen some real positive results dosing vc before the heater malfuntioned.

Ey Pufferpunk !

I´m using your suggestion (Vitamin C) since 4 days. Sorry if this question is already answered, but my english is so bad.

Is the treatment continuous or is for a period of time?

I´m trying to keep my phospate between 0.03 and 0.06 , and my nitrate between 5 and 10.

After 4 days using Vitamin C, my phospate level has fell to 0ppm
and my nitrate level has fell to 0.5ppm.

Can you explain this ? Is it a normal consequence ?

When I throw Vitamin C into the tank, my redox drops from 400 to 100.

My tank needs 3 hours to get the redox to 400.

Is it normal?

Is the Vitamin C treatment damaging to my another lps corals ?

Thanks you so much.

Yes, VC is used as an organic carbon source, similar to dosing vodka. See: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php
I don't know why you would want any nitrate of phosphate in your system Most folks want to see both of those at 0. I was thrilled to find out this was a side effect of dosing VC.

Yes, it also dose reduce O2 in the system but not enough to do any harm--certainly not in my tank. LPS, SPS & all my softies are doing quite well & much enhanced by VC. Have you seen pictures of my tank?

This is what I started out with at 1st. They are made with a lot of fillers we don't want in our tank & also are not buffered, which will disturb your pH & alk. Do not use them!

Pufferpunk, I've been dosing straight Sodium Ascorbate in powdered form which I buy in bulk from a local natural foods store. Is this an acceptable form?

$17.00 a lb., but it goes a long way in my small system. I'm finding that success with Vitamin C depends a great deal on dosage. I had almost immediate improvement on a small dose, but the Zoas started to retract again until I upped the dose. They seem to be coming back now. I'm letting the Zoas dictate the dosage.
