How long was the biocube setup before VC dosing? How often do you do water changes? If you just cut down on the VC the fuzz will disappear.

I've seen this fuzz from vodka, sugar, vinegar, and the combination. It would only make sense that VC could cause the same at a high enough dose. I'm at 1ppm VC daily and don't think that I will see anything negative from it.

What I am finding interesting is VC can be upped to 100ppm. If you did that with v/s/v you would completely destroy your aquarium equilibrium.

I ask because I am experiencing a white slime all over my frag tank. This only has happened since I did a really good cleaning, because there was a huge hair algae problem all over everything. It's only a 15g tank, so by the time I scraped & syphoned everything, I would up doing a 100% WC on it. I have a HOB FW filter filled with rubble & a skmmer on it. No other LR in the tank. I thought that was from some sort of bacteria bloom?

I'm very concerned about it, since I'm leaving on a week's vacation Saturday & I just fragged about 100 things for the upcomming frag swap, the week I get back. I also keep my most expensive frags in there... I have been dosing that tank with fairly high amts of VC for over a year, so I'm not sure how this might correlate with the slime but you also mentioned something about the time ryno212's cube was set up?

the cube was set up in Nov but was done with water and live rock from my 120. I only had one fish in there and I feed him every other day, so I know it is not that. Do you think I need to cut down on just one dose of 1/8 tsp? like half of that once a day? Oh and I do a 5 gallon water change every week. The wierd thing though it happened right after a water change too. I blew off all the rock and in the back of the chambers in the Biocube, which I have not done before this time. That could have caused this bloom of white fuzz with the vit C.

Are you also dosing in your 120?
What type of protein skimmer do you have on your BC?

Yes, blowing nutrients around could potentially cause this issue. Having more organics in the water and then adding VC may stimulate bacterial uptake and growth.

no I was not dosing in the 120 when I set up the 29BC.. I hsve a tunze 9002 on the 29g back chamber with mangroves as well

I thought the brown slime WAS cyano. So....dinoflagellates? Does everyone reduce lights, wet skim and increase pH to get through this phase?

i have adjusted. this is some foul, septic stuff i am getting out of the collection cup. the level was high, so not too foamy, but its pulling consistent gunk out since i started dosing.

end of the day, not really complaining.

check out the bubble magus lineup. thoroughly impressed. i have had several skimmers, PM, coralife, turbofotor etc.

this thing is HOSS!

My G2 isn't pulling anything like that, even after dosing. I get green tea or nothing. I dread having to move my tank, remove the skimmer and clean it....

I need to figure out a process to drain and clean my sump and skimmer with vinegar or muriatic acid without corrupting my tank.

And then program my Neptune to do it.

Jeni, is that pic I posted dinoflagellates? And do people generally follow Randy's strategy during this phase (pH, dark, underfeed?)

The brown slime occurred as a function of the vitamin c and I am trying to figure out what to do about it. Have you a useful suggestion?

:lol: Ok, I thaught you were asking whether the brown area on your sand was Dino's and its treatment. If you got Dino's from dosing vitamin c, it would be rare. You mentioned a page or two back that you had cyano and possible "slime algae". Mostly, if anything, people sometimes get a bacterial bloom that is short lived and solved by lowering dosing until it is solved. It's hard to tell what it is on your sand without a closer picture.
