Treats from off the beach?

I'm going to college at UCSB right now and I'm lucky enough to live two streets down from the beach. The other day, I was walking around the beach and I saw a few treat sized crabs walking around in the sand and of course the first though in my mind was that it would be fun to watch a mantis dismantle these little creatures haha

Can I put them in the tank? Can I wash them off and put them in there?

I feed my mantis the occasional wild caught treat. Coquina clams are plentiful on beaches around here, and a good food source.

Alright! Time for some entertainment tomorrow morning. My peacock is picking off my turbo snails one after the other... oh well... hopefully a few crabs off the beach can fill him up properly!

Hey I asked a local guy at a fish store this question and he said there is a possibility that you could contaminate the tank with some harmfull bacteria. Im not sure if what he said is true.

Im in SLO so im in the same boat as you. I can easily find stuff at local beaches to put in the tank. A

Any other opinions?

Well i tried it out and it seems to be working out great. I found a bunch of hermits off the beach and thought they were easy enough and small enough to catch and put in the tank...

Well as soon as I dropped one in there, he grabbed it and attacked just as I expected... Then I dropped a few more and MAN did this guy get greedy. He was holding like 3 crabs at a time and trying to grab more at the same time. My mantis is FINALLY full! but my tank looks like a graveyard. He must have ate atleast 5 or 6 of the crabs, and there are still five or so running around in the tank. He can have them when he wants.

Also, my LFS gave me a yellow tail blue damsel as a feeder fish when I bought him, and he's still alive 3 days later! I'm kinda glad cause it's a good looking fish and I didn't really want him to get eaten, but he seems to be getting a little too comfortable around my full mantis which is a deathwish I know whenever my mantis needs a treat. I just don't know what to feed him because I don't have any fish food and he looks hungry. He took a couple bites out of a hermit corpse but I think i'mma have to get him some food.

haha, thats funny. I was in the same boat. I just went to the pet store today and bought some fish food for 5 bucks. Before, the damsel was nibbling on leftover frozen krill i put in the tank.
