Tri-Cities Reef Club?

Hey, East Tennessee Guys, may I borrow your board for a post?

My name is Izzy, I live in the Tri Cities, and often times, I cannot get to Knoxville, or surrounding areas, because of my current situation with my back.

I would like to see if there is any interest in a local reef club. Not one that's spear headed by a LFS, but by hobbyists. I do not work for a fish store, but I would love to meet with other hobbyists just to talk shop. If a LFS would like to host a meeting, that's cool, but I think employees, and other affiliate of LFSs tend to have their own agenda, rather than what's best for the club.

I will spear head this project and get the first meeting together, if more than three people will show up!

Who's with me?

Just a note on LFS' and reef clubs. You certainly don't want an LFS running the club, but they are essential (IMO) to creating and growing a club. Without ours in Nashville, we would not be anywhere near as big as we are. The guys at one of the stores actually spearheaded it, but backed out of it to let it take form after we had structure. I'm not affiliated with any LFS', but thought I'd throw in my $0.02 worth;). Good luck with it:).

how many tri cities reefers are out there? I will be moving and may have some frags, rock, or even fish to possibly get rid if they are not doing well after the move. Is there a decent LFS in the tri cities area?

I know of at least 8 off the top of my head. The LFS are Pet Partners (Mostly FW, but getting into SW and WILL order for you), Pet Cove, Sea Oddities, and Ocean Inside.

I am just glad to hear there are a couple at least giving us something to choose from. I live in Tuscaloosa and there is nothing here but aquarium designs in Birmingham. Do you guys ever meet up for the drive to knoxville? Thanks for the advice on shops; any particular ones ya'll like? Thanks,

Brad

Shops ahoy!

Shops ahoy!

Don't ask me, I'm a little bitter at one of them! But Sea Oddities have been really nice to me, and they probably have a larger selection than most at least with softies and LPS. If you like SPS, no one here stocks good specimens, we just trade around with what we have. As a matter of fact, there's not many people that I know of who have the proper equipment to care for SPS here in the tri cities.

I think it’s a great idea and would love to come to a meeting! But I’m in school so it would have to be on a weekend.

Don't worry about thte time Fisher, I'll make sure that it works the meetings are on a weekend, or when everyone can agree to meet.
Also, did I mention, I have some contacts with a LOCAL store, not one previously listed, who is willing to give us discounts. I know I said that LFS have agendas, but this one has offered up discounts, group orders, and so on, and the owner's are good friends of mine. I'll be able to arrange cherry pick meetings, just for our members.

I am totally game for that as well. I am not a big sps guy and gave mine all away recently. I am with you guys on the equipment need/time needed to keep an sps tank "that and I like fish too much". What about making website where we could trade and the like, I know down here I always have something to trade or give away.

We will be moving late July and we will be in Kingsport at least five years mabye much longer if everything works out on the job front. I have some corals that should be fraggable in the not too distant future and currently have red, blue, and watermelon colored mushrooms that I will give away to friends here. I am thinning out my tank a little before the move and the kid comes ;) so I may defentaly need some restocking once I get it up and going smoothly again though my primary focus will be changing some things early and adding others during the move, new overflows and mabye an external pump for return.

Congrats! on your child! Where do you do Loss Prevention? I think that's a cool gig....Welcome to town, if you like NASCAR you'll love it here. If you like reefing, we'll make sure you love it here.

Reef Club

Reef Club

OK, I think we have enough interest to start the Tri-Cities Reef Club.

I think we can have the first meeting at my house in Piney Flats, which is easy to find, or a restaurant in JC. I'm thinking maybe March 24. It's a Saturday, and I should be moved in by then.

The reason it's so far off, is because my g/f and I just purchased this home, and it needs some things done. We close next Friday, and move in, on March 3. If anyone has any objections to the 24th, let me know. By then I should have everything done with the house, and I should be ready with what is needed for the reef club.
