When I've seen this happen, the lionfish usually doesn't live very long anyway, so growing the fins back is not a concern. The best thing you can do is get them into separate tanks, and keep your water conditions perfect. Be ready to have a hospital tank set up if there are any signs of infection.

I have a huma huma and a black volitan in a 150g the first time i fed them after introducing the trigger the trigger bit two of the lions "spines" off his pectoral fin. The trigger then went and hid in the rock work for about an hour. He was breathing heavily and i thought the trigger was going to die. In the end the lion grew his fins back and the trigger never screwed with him again. The two now live together peacefully.

P.S. Both fish have been about the same size as eachother since they were introduced. They are both around 6"-7" now.

I had a Niger Trigger with my lions, for about 1 1/2 yr problem free, mave just been luck
same here i have a dwarf lion and a niger in a 75 gal never had a problem not all triggers are as nasty as a queen or clown.

I keep my lionfish to himself in a highly filtered 20g. Only a little goldfish everyday, for company. He seems fine about it.

Two problems I see here. Long term, that tank is too small for a lionfish. The general claim is that they don't swim around much, however, IMO, that's only true when you leave them in small tanks. In large tanks, they tend to be much more active.

Second problem is the diet. Goldfish aren't good for lionfish. There's a compound in the goldfish that the lionfish liver is unable to breakdown, which ultimately leads to liver failure, and an early death.

A queen trigger makes a clown trigger look like a goby. I had a friend who kept a queen that was about 20" or so in a 500 gallon glass aquarium. The queen repeatedly rammed it's head into the side of the aquarium and actually ruptured a panel. It tore up the intake siphons, ate through powerhead cords and when they tried covering them with thick rubber tubing, it simply stripped the rubber and bit through the cords again. I have been attacked by these beasts on the reef as well. They are absolutely gorgeous but like the clown best left on the reef.

Crosshatch triggers are considered " upturned " ? Thus being a more reasonable tankmate than my blueline. ? What classifies them as upturned? I keep a star trigger. Allso a bluline. Not together. Never tried. Wouldn't want to risk either fish. However I want a lion. And my buddy just got in two large crosshatch triggers. Offered me one as he added his to the display tank. " can't ask for anything more than first Dibs on a fish like that ". I was most impressed to see two ten inch males. I have pics but I just signed up in here tonight.

Queen triggers are really destined to be sole tank residents. I have not seen any that grew up without eating everyone else in the tank. Undulatus are the same way. Those breeds are just bad boys.

"Upturned" is how the niger and the crosshatch's mouths are. They do not have the regular mouths that clowns, undulated, queens have. It is harder for them to do they're damage that way.

The shape of the mouth is the key. The triggers with more upturned mouths are primarily planktivores, so they're much less likely to pick on corals and such.

I would definitely not recommend putting a lionfish with a queen trigger.

Thank you I figured it was somthing with the snout. I noticed the rounded jaw of the sargassum Niger pinktail bluejaw ect. Never heard them called up turned. Thanks for the info

for what its worth ....ive had a picasso trigger and a volitans lion in the same 6ft tank for 2.5 yrs now . the lion is approx 9 inches and the trigger 5.

thay were introduced at the same time( which makes a difference,) and i have never had any trouble from either of them .

I always wanted a clown trigger along with Angels and lions. I have been doing some reseach and I am getting ready to add some more fish. I really like the Sargassum Triggerfish. Sure I would love to have a clown but I have heard to many horror stories about them. Are their any Sargassum Owners out there that could tell me more about them?
I have Emperor, Harqulein Tusk,Golden puffer, purple tang,Zebra Moray(3+ft) and tiny Snowflake. All get along well now in my 180. I want to add the trigger, queen angel, lion, and a few tangs to my 540 here after the first of the year. I will keep a watch on the angels towards the lion. I shouldn't have to worry tough about the sargassum trigger though at least.

this is a future horror story! your tank is too aggressive for sargassum trigger they are basically pacifist.
