Triton method and water testing

Hello Everyone,

I have decided to take my sps tank to another level of reefkeeping. I would like to try the Triton method maybe down the road, but before I do I will be sending out my water for testing.

I see they offer a big discount if 12 kits are ordered and was thinking that as a club we could all use a professional lab to test our water levels once or twice a year.

Below is the link where they sell the kits and if we buy 12 it only cost $41.50 this is really cheap for this level of testing. who knows maybe if the club has extra cash in its saving we can use some of that to fund it. I think if we are serious about progressing forward with our obsession this is what i think the club needs.

Besides I think a lot of good can come out of it to see what all our levels are at and we can compare to each other. This will allow us to figure out who is doing things correctly and incorrectly.

I would think getting 12 should be cake. Any idea if there's anything better than the $41.50 if we can get a real bulk savings?

I guess this test kit would be good for a die hard sps junkie that wants/needs to know exact parameters in tank. I for one am fine with just using salifert kits. I find that steady/constant parameters are more important than chasing levels.
Don't see reason why the club should fund everyone's test. $41 seems reasonable for anyone who really wants to know to pay for themselves. Not sure exactly how many members are in the club but $41 times xxx adds up quick. Lol.

Before the below come,s off the wrong way I am only trying to sell my idea even though I think its a good one Lol .

I think most if not all of the members I meat were all into Sps and spent lots of money on high end frags.

I for one am fine with just using salifert kits.

Below are the test kits I own and its not enough are even close to what this company provides and I have close to $200 INVESTED in kits and I still cant get what they provide.

I do agree that steady parameters are extremelly important but how would you ever no whats going on if your not testing your water ?

Well I totally disagree with the above statement, as one really needs to understand what is in there water and how to make corrections if needed. I know Of a few people that say don't chase numbers but spend thousands and thousands and thousand of dollars on equipment and every time something goes wrong they buy another piece of equipment.

Its like let me spend $400 dollars on a rare frag and not test my water to see if it will do good in the tank Oh yeah let me not spend the extra money on good lighting and then ask every single person why there sps look bland.

I just cant imagine why on earth would someone not want to spend $42 dollars on checking to see if the environment they keep thousands of dollars in fish and invertebrates on if there water is good or not.

With a statement like that I must ask are you a paid member? Also I never asked for the club to pay for the full amount. I only mentioned it because I was tole that the fund for the club is building up and they don't know what to spend it on and I thought everyone would benefit from this. Test like this cost between $120 AND $160 bucks so I was only trying to help the members,

Im I for two test .I think sal was in for one also I will ask him today ...I think the testimg is worth a shot I would go crazy changing things around when u get the results back but us it as a tool.lira had joe cap from manhatten aquariums do a talk on triton last fri night it was pretty good and he kindda made it sound like use it as a tool not a bible

Seems we are probably already close to 3/4 of the way to getting the 12 minimum. If it were sponsored by the club then we'd have some force for a bulk group buy deal.

I purchased one Triton test thru Unique Corals. The single test is $49 plus shipping. Came to $55. That includes the return shipping label. The water is tested in CA and not Germany, by Triton US. Unique Corals has the same $41.50 deal for 12 or more. They might be a good source to ask for a group buy of these. We would probably have to commit to many more than 12 I would think, to get any sort of significant discount.

I haven't yet sent out my sample for the Triton test, but I had a different water analysis done by Aquarium Water Testing. Same deal basically, but the Triton test looks a little more complete.

Here's part of what I received back from them via email.

The one thing that has me concerned is my readings for alkalinity using two different tests come back as 8.0 - 8.2. The reading from this test was much higher at 9.5. I tried calling and emailing them to ask what could possibly cause the discrepancy but they have yet to respond. Needless to say I won't be using them again. That is why I am going to purchase some Triton tests. So count me in for 2 - 4. I want to see if the results are significantly different.

Thanks for the clarification Bill as I thought I was done in Germany. It's funny about the your results almost the same thing for me on copper as well. I used them a couple times and found that there was way to many problems with there results.

I'm on the fence about participating myself, but if you're looking for more people, you might try inviting the LIRA crowd to join in.
As per RC policy, you should contact a member of the LIRA BOD and ask them to post the invite in LIRA's forum.

I had to miss the LIRA meeting this month and this was the topic. Hopefully some of the guys who made it will be at our meeting to bring us up to speed.

Interesting concept. I test my water at work multiple times a year and there is huge variances in certain categories even when taking a few samples at a time....hopefully with our tanks being a much more controlled environment it will be more consistent.

I hope its not all hog wash as I am trying so hard to better understand what i going on in my tank. My sps are looking really nice but I feel they can be better I did find out that my potassium is low so i ordered some hopefully this will help with the purples and the blues.

Another tool.

You still know your tank better than anyone else. If it helps you better understand your setup it's well worth it.
