Hello I am sort of new to saltwater been doing it for 6 months. I have a mixed reef tank, one guy recommended the use of tropic Marin bio cal. He told me to drop 2 scoops twice a week til my calcium gets to 460 than 1 scoop twice a week.levels have been pretty stable for last month. What do you guys think about this stuff

I have used TM Bio Calcium for 2 years and had very good results in my SPS tank. I find that being able to accuratley raise my Ca (one spoonful raises the calcium level of 5 gallons of water by 28 ppm) very convenient and takes much of the guess work out of dosing Ca.

It's fine, but it's most likely just calcium chloride. You would save money and have similar or better results by having a 2 or 3 part dosing regimen and dosing proper amounts for your usage daily or a few times a week. Do a google search for randy Holmes Farley and 2 part and read his article. Bulk reef supply is a good source for the calcium and magnesium, good ole arm & hammer baking soda for the carbonate/alkalinity portion.

How much to dose depends on what lives in your tank and how much calcium it uses. If you do 1 tsp per week and the tank uses less than that then your calcium will keep going up. Likewise if it uses more then it will go down.

The only way to know how much you need to dose is to check the levels with a test kit. Short of that you're just shooting in the dark.
