Tropicorum - Romulus Michigan

I visited Tropicorium advertised as Michigan's Largest Reef Store. 50,000 gallons on display.

The place is setup similar to a commercial fish hatchery with several large (2000-2500 gallon) pools/vats raised above the floor under a greenhouse roof. There was some supplemental lighting, but most of the corals were raised under natural lighting.

They had several aquariums with fish, inverts, and corals in other rooms as the pools/vats did not display or present the corals very well.

I was mildly disappointed as many of the pools/vats had algae issues (bubble, hair, red slime) and many of the corals lacked color. The presentation in the pools/vats was poor, especially in the areas with good surface current. They provided a floating acrylic box the allowed somewhat better viewing.

As a plus, their clams were very colorful and healthy, they had the largest collection of zoo's I ever seen on one place (however colors and types I've seen available locally), and had in stock some gorgonians, sponges, sun corals (orange & a pinkish red), and very colorful dendro & scleroneptha corals. Their staff was very friendly.

However, I did not see anything there that I as compelled to buy and take aboard the plane. It turned out to be a good thing as my flight was cancelled that evening due to crew and weather issues.

Just thought I'd share this with you.

Their website is www. Tropicorium.com home of the 9 for $99 frag
special.

That's surprising. From what I understand it used to be much more glorious. I'm from Michigan, and while I never got down to Romulus to see it, I did see some pretty wild colonies that ended up in the store I worked at, and another one that I frequented.

I think reviews like this should go on our website and we also should have a review for hardware including pumps, sumps, overflows, ro/di gadgets, filters, test kits, etc. I know I wrote a review on those Hydor flo's that I bought a long time ago and its always good to see peoples reviews of stuff before you buy em especially people ya know.

The review could include:
Item Name
Item Cost
Place purchased from
Date Ordered optional
Date Arrived optional

Small Reviews

back on topic is the web address in your post supposed to be blank?

Reviews are good although I'm not sure it would be wise to post unflattering reviews of the local fish shops on our website.

I would agree with Tibbs. I think that there's a place for it, but in fairness to the local shops, perhaps that needs to be in a password protected area so that we don't expose ourselves to undue liability. There have been cases before, some involving this website, that have brought forward legal action, and I don't think that we need that kind of exposure.
