I visited Tropicorium advertised as Michigan's Largest Reef Store. 50,000 gallons on display.
The place is setup similar to a commercial fish hatchery with several large (2000-2500 gallon) pools/vats raised above the floor under a greenhouse roof. There was some supplemental lighting, but most of the corals were raised under natural lighting.
They had several aquariums with fish, inverts, and corals in other rooms as the pools/vats did not display or present the corals very well.
I was mildly disappointed as many of the pools/vats had algae issues (bubble, hair, red slime) and many of the corals lacked color. The presentation in the pools/vats was poor, especially in the areas with good surface current. They provided a floating acrylic box the allowed somewhat better viewing.
As a plus, their clams were very colorful and healthy, they had the largest collection of zoo's I ever seen on one place (however colors and types I've seen available locally), and had in stock some gorgonians, sponges, sun corals (orange & a pinkish red), and very colorful dendro & scleroneptha corals. Their staff was very friendly.
However, I did not see anything there that I as compelled to buy and take aboard the plane. It turned out to be a good thing as my flight was cancelled that evening due to crew and weather issues.
Just thought I'd share this with you.
