Troubled Elegance

Wow, two "thumbs up" to Liveaquaria for doing that for you...
That is amazing customer service. I've never purchased corals on-line before. I've always been afraid that they won't do well in shipment or that the coral I get won't look anything like what it did in the pic, but with your experience I might be convinced to try these folks!! (I'm a sucker for good customer service!!)
I am sorry to hear about your Elegance, good luck with it and keep us updated...

Since I got a credit for the sick Elegance I picked up this nice Aussie from Zeppelin.

This is after about three hours in the tank.

Thanks Zeppelin it really looks nice and healhty.

I have been treating elegance corals successfully (whatever that means as we don't really know what the problem is! ) with dips in Melafix. It was suggested by Sprung in Vol 3 as a treatment for LPS with melting diseases. It works well for blastos and has done really well with many elegance corals so far. I'd definately give it a go. I beleive Sprung also has a differenct dip for corals now too that smells very much like melafix :) , just haven't tried it.

Yes.
I also, have a friend who owns a store and we began routinely dipping all new elegance regardless of source and they all did very well, either in his systems for extended periods of time or customers tanks. Awesome for blastos as well.

Well, the trouble there is there are so many causes of "brown jelly" problems with LPS that it's tough to be sure. Would I try it? Absolutely.

From a little Google search, it seems as though this is mainly a treatment for infections in ponds/Koi. How have you been going about treating corals with this? What dosage have you been using? Time of exposure? I'll pick up another Indo and give it a shot. Thanks.

I let someone borrow my RV 3 so i don't rememeber the exact recommended dose, but I use it at 5 mls or so in a gallon or two of water. I've let them sit in it for up to 30 miutes without any negative issues. I think the rec. time in thebook is 5 minutes, but like I said it seems longer times is no problem.

It is sold as a pond/koi medication. But it is simply a holistic plant extract that has some antibacterial and antifungal characteristics. It has worked very well!!

I have 2 that are almost 2 years in my aquarium at the moment and another at about 6 months. My friend used to lose many that came into the store before they sold. Since dipping upon arrival, loss of zero.
I don't have any photos at hte moment, but would be nice to have some, I'll see if I can get a few! :)

Sorry to hijack but this might be of interest to some of you.

I introduced an elegance into QT on Feb 19. Slowly went down hill but is holding on at the moment. Last Friday I put another elegance in which is doing extremely well since. Last night I cleaned the front glass on the QT and while I was looking around at the elegance, etc I noticed tiny black things floating around in the water. I started looking even more closely at everything and noticed they were tiny black worms floating in the water, attached to the bottom, on the sections of PVC, etc. Anyone ever have these? Ever notice them? You would have to look extremely closely and pay extreme attention to even see them but they are there in my QT anyways. I'll see if I can post pics later on. Might they be what could be attacking elegance corals and killing them? Just tiny worms not to worry about? Anyone?

Personally I would scrub that tank clean and dip those corals! I have never seen black worms but it sounds weird!

Elegance Coral,

Have you had the chance to try out another Indo Elegance with the Melafix dip? I know it hasn't been long but just wanted to know. If this type of dip works, I think it is such a great method that would allow hobbyists to enjoy a coral that so far hasn't had that good of a track record.

Please keep us updated with your findings.

No, I haven't had a chance to do anything with this yet. I don't believe it will "cure" the problem. It may help to fight off the infection, though. Anything that can reduce the number of microbes infesting the coral, should increase its odds of survival. The best way to avoid this problem is to purchase Australian Elegance corals.
