true or false perc?

This is a close-up of the "top" fish in my previous post titled "ID please". What do you think, true or false percula?

true percula for the following reasons:
dorsal height (low)
eyering (very orange)
shape and elevation of the nape.
heavy amount of black behind the upper eye bar

also if you trust the lfs and they say so and are pricing them accordingly have some faith. I would be happy I had a true perc there.

All,

Nobody has mentioned the only two sure-fire ways to I.D. these two species - knowing WHERE it was collected (the range of the two species do not overlap), and counting the dorsal spines (XI in ocellaris and X in percula). All the other methods are imprecise or very subjective.

FWIW: it looks to me that the dorsal fin of the fish in the photo has a nip out of the top - making the height ratio pretty difficult to determine.

I also had the same question about mine, I've attached pictures if anyone can ID it as a true or false perc. Thanks. I apologize if this is inappropriate to add my own to this thread, I just figured since we were on the same topic, it couldn't hurt.
Thanks, Brett

Jay - You are correct, the dorsal does have a nip out of it. It is growing back nicely and I expect that within the next month or so it'll be completely regrown.

yours looks to me like false perc,
if you read adtravels reasons for laf-reefs being true perc, all the opposites apply to your clown. I would say occelaris.

ok, yeah I wasn't sure, it was labeled as a false when I bought it, but it definitely had the darkest black outlines and the best color out of all the rest in the tank. Thanks.

The picture is of too poor quality to tell for sure. Eye cannot be use in a flash picture. The amount of black is typical of Ocellaris, see the second fish posted for ID in this thread. That is a Ocellaris for sure.

After seeing tons and tons of clowns its alot easier to tell the difference. Just an FYI dorsal spine counting is NOT the best way to tell the difference either. They can both have 10 spines...

The first one is alittle hard to get a positive ID because of the poor picture quality. I'd guess True perc from the shape of the middle bar. A perc does not have to have a ton more black than a false, I've seen plenty with less black than some false. Did the LFS have a collection location?

Second one is 100% Ocellaris! It has the common false perc middle bar thats just a large triangle.

i just feel like the shape is congruent with the true perc i do think the second fish is a false i only guessed
