Is your yellow lab a false golden retriever? They are different dogs and these are different fish and should be known by their correct species names. We might as well start calling Saddlebacks false Latz too while we're at it.

Common names can be argued back and forth (which is why scientific is better), but false percula clownfish is another name for ocellaris clownfish. False percula, although not a popular name for the fish on these boards, has been used in literature to describe Amphiprion ocellaris. Both ocellaris and false percula are used to describe the same species of fish (Amphiprion ocellaris), although it should be made a point to use Ocellaris when describing the species (IMO and probably alot of others also).

True perculas (Amphiprion percula) are usually called true perculas or perculas, however I have seen many ocellaris labled as percula clownfish in pet stores, which further adds to the common name confusion.

This is the problem exactly. If there was no such thing as "false percula" pet stores would be more inclined to properly label their stock. It's probably a bad idea to shop anywhere that labels an Ocellaris a Percula anyway. They probably do not know much about their fish.

Thanks for the link, I saw that previously and that's what prompted me to post. When looking at them in person, they look exactly like the photo on the left for the True Perc on that page. Which confused me even more.

Your confusion stems from the fact that the first fish they have labeled as a percula is actually an ocellaris. :hmm2:

One of the popular wholesale distributors in the LA area lists the ocellaris clown as percula on their stock list, so they probably label them via their wholesale list.

Whats even worst is when I see clarkii clownfish labeled as sebae clowns
