True Perc's Maiting?

Greetings All,

I noticed this evening that both of my perc's were cleaning the LR right next to their host anemone ... I know this is pre-mating behavior, what does everyone think? I know its best to remove the egg's just prior to hatching into a controlled tank but I can't the LR they might be on is the bast of a mountain.

Suggestions? I was thinking of trying to syphon fry out once hatched into a easily controlled environment, like my quarantine tank so I could feed an care for them easier. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

There are a few set ups for siphoning the fry out, the eggs tend to hatch in the very early morning, like middle of the night, so sitting there all night isn't the greatest fun.
If you by the book on clownfish by I think Joyce Wilkerson, she has a picture of what she uses to actually grab the boogers up as they hatch.

BUT!!!! to save youself a lot of time and trouble get one of the rough surface tiles from the home improvement store, like a 2inch by 2 inch and put it right by the area the cleaned. If it is too late, put one in there anyways because they will use it in two to three weeks after those hatch when they spawn again.

The book I mentioned is a must have if you plan on raiseing those guys too, it's a lot of work, and a lot of trial and error.

Good luck with them! I know if you get into successfully breeding them a lot of local fish stores will buy them for near wholesale prices, due to the fact that tank raised, and locally bred makes them worth it, tank raises are a lot hardier, and the fact that they are locally bred means that they have not had the stress of long distance shipping.

Yes please check out the www.chicoreefclub.com page for more information about our meetings. There are some people who have success with raising baby fish but generally it takes a pretty dedicated setup to do so.

I would recommend reading as much as you can about it on this forum and others as well as books on the subject. Also, you could post this initial thread on one of the other general interest forums on RC and get hits from others outside our region.

Congrats on your first post in a year! I sat idle for over a year before I posted my first post as well. Wow, I'm actually up to like 0.51 post per day now.
