Trying to breed Bangaii Cardinals

After talking to Frank Marini @ MACNA, I decided to give this an attempt. I have a dedicated 10 gallon setup with 3 Bangaii's. But I am afraid I ended up with 3 females.

I have 2 - 5 gallon setups ready to go should they breed. I plan to split the batch into 2 groups in expectation of better survival. Then I have 3 10 gallon tanks ready to go after that. I plan to move them from the 5 gallon tanks to a 10 gallon tank after about a month (or when ever the next batch arrives). I have a station ready to go for making anapuli, so once I do have a clutch, they should be easy to keep going.

How big are they? My pair has bred about 3 times, but the male has eaten the eggs after a few days every time. I will remove the eggs and put them in an egg tumbler next time I guess. Good luck!

Well, I didn't have a good experience. I had about 24 in a 10 gallon tank, took half the lfs, a week later I had none and they all died at the lfs too.

I have no idea what went wrong. The male was in that tank for weeks holding the eggs. They were fat from baby brine shrimp which I was hatching continually. One by one they just started swimming funny and died.

Also, how do you figure you have 3 females? Were you able to watch them in the display tank before you bought them? I got mine from a tank of four. One fish chased two of the other cardinals but allowed one to stay very close. Not a sure thing, but turned out to be a pair for me. I noticed the male holding today, glad he ate well last night. It should take 3 weeks so Dec 7 we'll see what happens.

did you feed the brine shimp HUFAs by using Zoecon or Selcon? My first batch of babies died the same way until I read up on the importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids.....basically they can be full of shrimp, but without certain nutrition needs being met in their first days/weeks they will all start to swim funny and die.

Frogmanx82, how old were the fry that you sold to the LFS ? What were they eating at the time ?

I didn't sell them, I just gave him half of them at about 4 days old. They were eating BBS.

I have a female b.c,she has dropped eggs twice,I need a male for her.What would be the best way,get 2 or 3 more b.c.Or would they fight.They will be in a 120.

Based on the fish in the picture, the fish looks too young/small to breed, or sex. I suspect your three fish are juveniles. Of course with only three fish you are not guaranteed to get at least one pair (odds jump up to near 99% if you get five or six to start with). Give these fish six months, who knows maybe in that time two will pair up, (the third likely being killed in the process).

I put 5 young banggai into a 125 with no problem. There is potential if you have more than one male that they will fight, but then seperate them off into seperate breeding tanks (or sell in your local club).
