Trying to keep tangs healthy in a fish only

So I am aware that tangs need to eat their veggies to keep from falling ill to disease...I usually feed formula 2 cubes regularly. I also try to feed them dried seaweed on an algae clip. I am wondering if feeding them anything else would help (grocery store bought lettuce??? - Is this nutritious for them?).

Thanks for any help that is offered.

I've always been told no because it is not native to their natural habitat. But I have fed it to mine (make sure you wash it good). They went nuts over it. I got the big leaf romaine lettuce. Many say it isn't good on their digestive system.

well romaine is up for debate, but I live by it along with nori. All my tangs have been feed it for over 3 yrs and my fish have doubled and tripled in size. I also have a naso that was obtained from a fellow reefer that was feed entirely romaine for over 5 yrs. For being bad for them I dont know how that could have happened. One of my fellow boards memeber on here (tangers) also is a romaine believer. Results is what I live by not theories. I believe my tangs size, color and health cant attest to whomever says its not healthy for them.

As thor said I also feed my tangs romaine, but just like he said they get it along with nori, mysis, and all their other foods. I have a 5" sohal that came in to my tank about 6 months ago with a major case of hlle. He actually had very visable scars along with a 1" lateral "hole", along with a very pinched stomach. He was extremely mean and absolutely did not get along with my red sea sailfin. I was determined however to heal him. After about 1 month him scars started the dissappear and to this day you can't see anything. He is also one of the most passive fish in my tank to this day. I have him in my 125 with four other tangs with absolutely no aggression problem. My theory is tangs eat all day if they are not fed often and properly they will fight and become territorial. Before the tang police come out there is a 375 gallon in the garage ready to go for these guys within a year. Regardless I would like anyone to tell me between both his lack of agression and scars that I have not supplied this tang and/or any other tang the correct diet and or living conditions.

My large Sailfin and Blue hippo eat Formula 1 and 2 flake, Algae Sheets and live macro. Both are fat and healthy

As is with everything - variety is the spice of life.
Frozen foods with veg. matter are always good, as are the various pellet and flake foods designed for fish like angels & tangs & butterflies.... couple this with plenty of nori and your tangs should be fat, healthy, and happy.

If you gorw live macro algae, and if they'll eat it, this is good also.

My motto with regard to keeping tangs happy and healthy is that if at any stage they manage to finish the nori in the clip, then you hven't fed enough. You should make it available for as long as possible every day, and put in enough so that a little bit gets left every night..... and remove before lights out :)

I've read that you should't leave the algae sheets in the tank for more than a couple hours and to remove any that is uneaten. You don't think that it begins to pollute the water after being in there for hours?

Mine quite up with magnets. Clips just get ripped off, because I have big fish. So they are put up at 8 in the mourning and taken down at 6 or so at night and I have never had any problems.

I dont know if I can do this but do I have to give my sohal tang algee sheets every day? He sure is a mean one tearing at my blue jaw triggers fins, is that because of feeding problems?

I put drops of Zoe and/or Selecon on my Nori and wait for it to soak in. Alsong with Formula 1 & 2, Formula for Angels (sponge cubes), Raw shrimp, and Spectrum with Thera A.

And my Tangs are doing wonderful.

very well could be. as I said before, mine was the meanest one in the tank when he came in. the two people who had him before me got rid of him for the same reason, he was just too mean. after being in my tank for 6+ months now with ample and proper food he has absolutely no aggression problems.

Agreed somewhat. If a fish is naturally mean it is always going to be mean. You have to watch and not overfeed. Sohal's are naturally MEAN.
