Tucson reef tank

The cleanup started in January. Plumbing, electrical, sump, equipment procurement, setup and finally water April 7, 2016. Finalized initial setup. Have to dial in lights. Looking into Apex Neptune controller and Genesis water system. Any with experience in the Genesis?

Thanks,

I received my Tiger shark glass cleaner from Algae free. WOW. Really cleans the glass. I'm also considering doing 2 water changes a month. A 20 gallon on the 15th of the month and the other a 50 gallon change on the 30th. I am creating a "U shaped" siphon that is set to 20 gallons and one set to 50 gallons. That way it makes water changes more accurate.

I will be doing 1/2 synthetic and 1/2 Catalina filtered water. Not yet for another 2 months. Cycling still. I've read both that one should wait and another that water changes should be performed. Right now, my water is crystal clear, no algae bloom and the lights are all OFF. There's virtually little light where that office is located. We've been keeping the door closed and lights out.

I decided to go the LFS and study their SPS tank. It was quite nice and I decided that this time around I would do mostly SPS, tangs and then we'll see.

I checked out their flow strategy, read a bunch from the Reef Central posts and determined I needed a new sump, return pump, reactor pump, chiller and chiller pump, ph probes and lighting.

Mike and Justin from the LFS are a great source of knowledge. Plus, they are really nice and helpful.

My parallel conquest was to design a sump. I wanted a 72"x24"x20" sump that had bubble chambers to catch all of the bubbles. I also wanted a filter sock area, a live rock section, an in tank skimmer (reused), a built in deep sand bed refugium and a return section. After some help from Mike and Justin on some fine tuning, it was time for an acrylic manufacturer in town to build this beast.

Sump picture file size is too big. May have to take a picture and post.

Every four days for 6-8 weeks before putting frags in the display tank.

Thanks Dave,

I broke down and purchased a 20g quarantine tank. I'll use it as a frag tank, too. AI Hydra 52 HD for lighting; Reef Octopus 1000 hang on skimmer, MaxSpect Gyre XF130; HMO-100 Finnex Heater; Cobalt MJ1200 Powerhead for dip bucket;ReVive Coral Cleaner - Two Little Fishies; Coral Rx

Another setup project while DT is cycling.

Mike at LFS, Fishy Bizness, said he'd dip my SPS before I take them from the store.

He'll probably only do it once. You need to do it repeatedly to catch hidden egg clusters that could hatch at any time for weeks. Don't take chances.

I used an Apogee PAR meter to characterize the light in my tank. The lights were at 75% capacity due to ramp. Have to check after noon when the lights are running at 100%. Apogee MQ-200 tie wrapped the probe to my 3' cleaning pole.

I don't understand. Please explain?
Dipping only kills the active adult flatworms that are exposed at the time of the dip. Any unhatched flatworm eggs buried deep in the cracks and pores of the rock will be unaffected by the dip. You want to repeat the dipping process several times during the quarantine period.

You cannot expect to get all the potential pests with one dip. Just as you would quarantine a fish for 6-8 weeks before introducing it to the display tank in order to catch and remedy any potential disease or parasite outbreaks, you should also count on 6-8 weeks quarantine for all rock and inverts. Most people will only dip if the rock contains SPS corals, but really, anything, even a snail shell, could potentially introduce some unwanted hitchhiking pathogen into your system. That's what the 6-8 weeks quarantine should help bring to light so you will have a chance to eliminate it.

Thank you for the explanation. Do you feel that cutting the frag plug from purchased SPS coral is necessary?

If you are dipping repeatedly over an extended quarantine period I don't see any benefit to cutting the plug. I would cut the plug only if it interferes with mounting the frag.

That totally depends on how your rock is set up. Some people pre-drill their rock with mounting holes specifically so that they can easily mount frag plugs and be able to move a plug to several different locations in order to find what suits a coral best.

Update: received ai hydra 52 he for the quarantine tank. Also, received Hanna trust kits I ordered from brs. Will use the kits after I add livestock. Still initial cycling th tanks. Just started turning the lights on. Had brown algae first day of light exposure.

Characterized tank with the par meter. I have mixed lighting results due to the eurobrace supports and the original mounting kits for the ai lights. High light under LEDs but, quickly dissipated outside light spread and in rock shadows.

Mike at fishy bizness turned me on to some brackets they have to turn the light orientation in line with my rock structure. There is noticeably more coverage. It's a par trade off. I highly recommend the apogee par meter for the reefer that wants to minimize losses.

Side note: new rodi filters came from marine depot. Selcon, garlic and reef chili came from brs today. Getting ready! Also, purchased some new frags from lfs, fishy bizness, monti's, and stags, and encrusting. All are sitting at 230 par high flow in the lfs. Thanks, mike and co. For your support of the people re entering the hobby.

Many knowledgeable people working at the lfs along with some very seasoned customers. Gaining a lot of insights by stopping by the store, daily. Multiple times!!

Tank still cycling...got a 3 dozen snails to eat the brown algae. Some small strands of hair algae, too. I'm up to 22 SPS frag's at the LFS.
No fish, yet. I want : 3 Yellow Tangs; 1 Blonde Naso Tang, 1 Chevron Tang, 1 Sailfin Tang, 1 Purple Tang and lastly 1 Powder Blue Tang. Rest of fish can be small gobie's (yellow) and maybe some other schooling fish. Chromis??? Cardinals...
