Tucson reef tank

BRS GFO & Carbon Reactor – Dual with MJ1200 Pump
300181 1 purchased. Have a little hair algae (A few strands). Want to make sure I keep this parameter under control.
4” x 14” BRS Mesh Filter Sock with Draw String
205906 2 - Was going to put the charcoal and phosphate material in the bag prior to putting into reactor. Last time I had a GFO reactor, the media got soooo hard that I couldn't get the media out of the reactor. Probably waited too long.

Is the filter sock a good or bad idea?

5 Gallon (35 lbs.) - BRS Bulk GFO - High Capacity
000625 1 : Has anyone used this product? Any good?

5 Gallon - BRS Bulk Premium ROX 0.8 Carbon
000525 1 : Hope this is good. Lots of good comments on BRS.

Also purchase a small cooling fan from DRSFOSTERSMITH to cool down the quarantine tank. The HYDRA 52 HD heats up the water a bit. Figured a cooling fan on a timer may do the trick.

Also, purchased the Potassium test kit. Had to get FREE shipping.

if you get a few of the vortech products they can have battery backups. That will handle a day or so of flow and save quite a bit over the cost/hassle of a generator. Of course if it's summer time when the power goes out, you will get losses from heat. I keep a portable generator for the long power outages now.

about ten years ago I lost power for 2 days and even though I had flow running from a generator, not being able to run my AC meant the house got up to 100 degrees.

Prickles, thanks for the feed back. I have a chiller hooked up to he main display and a cooling fan on the quarantine. Need to insure that livestock will survive the monsoon outages when I'm not in the office.

Well, the cleanup crew got rid of all of the diatoms and wiped out all of the hair algae. Small critters all over the glass. Added the brs phosban Carbon reactor today. Also added 3 yellow tangs, 1 purple tang and 3 blue green chromis. Left lights of for acclimation purposes. Added cleanup crew to the quarantine tank to help with the algae bloom. Lights off for the quarantine, too.

Testing water tomorrow for ca, alk, nitrate, phosphate, ammonium, ph, salinity, and mag. Haven't dosed yet. Will do a large water change within the next few weeks or when alk goes below 7. Did add a sea Chem 28 block to the sump.

Dosing alk. 1 drip every 4 sec for 10 hours tonight. Checking alk tomorrow. Low ph dusting nights. Thus, alk drip should work out by morning. Ph was 7.9 today.

The IV method is a little lacking. The alkalinity solution clogs the small drip tube and needs to be adjusted during the drip cycle. Thus, 9 hour drip at 1 drip per 4 seconds is not really achievable. I got in this morning and the drip wasn't going. Had to manually adjust bubble valve to regulate flow. I will continue this week fine tuning process.

1. Added small hang on fan on the quarantine tank.
2. Added ph meter from PinPoint to quarantine tank.
3. Received more mesh bags for phosban and carbon
4. Received potassium test kit
5. Dosed Sodium Carbonate...raised Alk from 6 to 7. Dosed again today and no increase. Mg is 1200 and Ca is 460. Dosing again tomorrow.
6. Added 3 yellow tangs, 1 purple tang and 3 blue green chromis. - see pic. All eating Oyster eggs, Mysis, and Mixed omnivore cubes soaked in garlic and selcon. Tangs ate nori. It took a little while for them to get used to the floating nori pieces. Once they started eating it...they devoured the nori.
7. LFS, Fishy Bizness, is receiving in a Blonde Naso tang tomorrow and Chevron and Red Sea Sail fin next week. I'll let them medicate and get them eating before I bring back to my tank.

Going to wait for quarantine to cycle before I put any of the SPS for quarantine. Right now they are all sitting on a "reserved" rack at the LFS.

The mini fan is on a timer. It goes on 2 hours after the lights come on and for a few hours after the lights go off. Did a good job regulating temperature to around 76 degrees. Was going to 79.8 before the fan. Adjusting the air a few inches above the water seems to be working for me. When the fan was directed at the water surface, the temperature decreased to 74.

Added more soda ash solution with go change to alk...or minimal, ca to 460 and mg at 1200. Dosed mg yesterday. Going in today to test alk, my and ca to see if the mg made a difference.

Placed an order for dried, non toasted nori sheets, Magnetic nori clip, 30" tongs, and 2 wavepoint t5 36" h.o. Light fixture to span front and back of tank. Supported by the euro braces. 36" measured from edge of one euro brace to the other. Hopefully this will work. Placed 2 X 6's across eurobrace said to simulate the shading of the t5 fixtures. Had very little effect since the ai hydra 52 he led's have such a narrow, directed light pattern. I'll checkout par mapping once received and installed.
