yesterday i went cycling early in the morning and the power went off in my house, a canister filter stated leaking and syphoned out water below my protien skimmer. it was running dry for mabey an hour and no longer works. when i plug it in, the pump gets a little warm but no sound. so i am assuming that it is broken. can i replace the pump on this skimmer? the few (major) problems i am facing are cost (i am a poor student) location (perth, west australia) and the fact that this skimmer is pritty old, and was bought in germany (i think).

if i cant fix the skimmer then i will probably sell the tank, for practically nothing as it has a huge hair algea problem, and mabey get back into the hobby if i win lotto or somthing.

thanks
stuart

btw the skimmer looks identical to the ones called Autom. skimmer on this page http://www.tunze.com/usa/index.html?lang=en-gb

The fact that the motor still gets warm when plugged in tells me the problem is the dry run sheared the base plate of the magnet or damaged a part of the drive unit. You simply need part 3000.50. If you check on the Tunze website you can get a PDF of the dissessembly instructions for the pump. Please keep it unplugged until you can get the part which is US about $27.

Stuart,

If you like try Perth Aquarium and Display Centre we carry a lot of parts and if not in stock can certianly organise the replacement part. Best thing is to bring the whole unit in and we can check it out for you.
As Roger mentioned not a major cost.

thanks guys

a friend came by and we messed around with the thing for an hour or so and managed to find the impeller, shook it around heaps and it (sort of) worked again. the bubbles are not rising up the shaft though, but i have had this problem before, and eventually it should start working.

Graeme, i thought tunze didnt ship to australia anymore? but then again i never knew there was TUNZE USA, i thought there was only the germany side of the company.

thanks all the same
stuart :D

Glad to hear you have things operating.

We are offer all Tunze products to the Australian market and use/recomend the range. We are in the process of setting up a new 1300 litre reef display utilising all Tunze gear if you have a chance drop by in a month or two and have a look at the dispay.

i was in a few days ago, bought a cherry clown and a lawnmower blenny, and some seachem PhosGuard; you might remember me. your last two display tanks were brilliant untill the aptasia took over, i cant wait to see the 1300 litire set up. i should pop by soon enough :D

I would like to point out that the fact it stopped indicates a problem that if unresolved will ruin the pump. This pump complete is $150- please unplug it and get the part.

i had a few pieces replaced at perth aquarium and the skimmer is running better than it ever has (i bought it second hand)

thanks
stuart

Roger,

You were spot on with the diagnosis of Stuarts pump the base plate hade sheared off and one of the brake shoes was broken.
A quick clean up and one new 3000.50 impellor assembly and the pump is like new.
