Tunze 6305 buzzing + other Q's

Hey Roger,

I just got in four 6305's. What a great pump -- it seems like all the annoying "features" from the old version have been engineered out. (You can unplug the things for cleaning, the clamp mechanism is ingenious, and the magnets actually work.)

One of my 4 pumps is not like others, however. It came with different, non-perfectly-aligned bubble wrap. It did not come with the rubber sticky feet (which I noticed are usually attached to the regular, blue bubble wrap, and makes me think it even more likely that this one was repackaged). The clamp is a smidge weaker -- I'm not sure how to describe it other than that; it just doesn't quite have the grip of the other three. And most importantly, this pump buzzes. The other are almost silent. Ugh!

Any tricks I can try to quell the last problem with doing an exchange? Anything I should be aware for the clamping thing? (It seems strong enough to hold, but I've only had them wet for a few hours now.)

Thanks,

Ben

The missing bumpons could be a cause of the noise, they are fairly important to reduce the transmission of vibration, I can certainly send you some. There are a few ladies that package the pumps and they all do it differently so there is some variation in how they are boxed. The clamp is quite flexible and usually you can just squeeze it and increase the hold. The other causes of noise could be the loose clamp or a problem with the drive unit, likely something simple like the disk moved up in shipping or a piece of packing material got into the pump.

Hi Roger,

Yeah, I was unclear above -- each pump comes with extra bumpons, so I put some on this one as well.

I will try holding the pump separate from the clamp and see if it still makes the noise so at least we can isolate it to the pump itself. When you say "the disk [could have] moved up in shipping," can you explain what I should look for there?

Thanks,

Ben

At the bottom of the shaft under the drive assembly is a blue silicon bushing (one should be on each end of the shaft). Between the bottom silicon bushing and the drive unit should be a black disk, it is like a thick plastic/graphite washer. This can slide up on the shaft, it should be against the silicon bushing.

Roger,

The bushing is firmly down on the shaft at the bottom, where I suppose it is supposed to be. I tried running the pump today in my hand (not in the clamp), and it still makes lots of noise compared to the other 3.

Should I just RMA this thing?

I would prefer to take care of it directly, can you PM me your address, phone and email and I will call tomorrow we can do a walk through of some simple things and worst case I will arrange to swap you out.

Hey Roger,

I parallelized with Marine Depot (they hadn't called me back all day, and I got a little impatient since I've placed almost $5k in orders with them over the last week) and they're just going to swap it out. I kind of want one with a better clamp anyway; it is still sliding all over the place in the tank and making minor sandstorms.

Thanks for your help,

Ben
